Liverpool fans urge Brendan Rodgers to appoint the Slovakian as new club captain at the end of the current season, replacing club legend Steven Gerrard.
This may come as a surprise to many, however, despite Martin Skrtel being regularly being criticised for some shaky performances earlier this season, Brendan Rodgers’ decision to switch to a back three has seen the defender improve tremendously. Rodgers’ 3-4-2-1 system, has revived a potency to Liverpool’s attack, but also a stability to their defence - Skrtel being an ever present during this period. He played all but one game since this tactical switch, and that was due to suspension.
During Liverpool's 2-2 draw with Arsenal earlier in this campaign, Skrtel donned a protective headband and scored a late equaliser in a performance that was described as “brave”. This is a feeling that has been echoed by many as the 30-year-old is seen as player very much from football’s old school. The Slovakian often adopts a 'if in doubt, kick it out' mentality to his game - this is shown by his average of 10.39 clearances per game this season (according to Squawka), more than any other Liverpool player.
With the defensive frailties that were evident at the beginning of the season, Skrtel can now focus on the fundamental defensive work he has proven to thrive at: tackles, blocks and,when required, clearances. Now in back three, with the support of Emre Can and Mamadou Sakho, the natural leadership (and raw defensive abilities) of Martin Skrtel are allowed to blossom.
