Jim Craft, police chief in Lafayette, confirmed that three people had died, including the gunman. He said seven people were injured in the shooting, some critically.
Police scotched rumours there was a secondary shooter and officers said the weapon used was a handgun.
The shooting happened about 20 minutes into a 7.00pm showing of the movie Train Wreck.

"We heard a loud pop we thought was a firecracker," she said. she described the gunman as "an older white man", and said he stood up and started shooting.
"He wasn't saying anything. I didn't hear anybody screaming either," she said.
The shooting comes three years after gunman James Holmes killed 12 people and injured 70 more during a packed screening of The Dark Knight Rises in Aurora, Colorado.
Holmes was found guilty of the massacre earlier this month.
Louisiana governor Bobby Jindal praised police officers who ran towards the shots.
He said "senseless" and "seemingly random acts of violence" "make us both furious and sad at the same time".
"We're a resilient community. This is an awful night ... We will get through this."
