The Jigawa state House of Assembly has elected new principal officers to replace those impeached on Thursday.
Few weeks to the emergence of seventh Assembly, the Jigawa Assembly Thursday morning impeached the principal officers, accusing them of misconduct and abuse of power.
The House elected former speaker, Idris Garba Kareka as the new speaker, Bala Hamza Gada as chief whip and Kais Abdullah as majority leader.
DAILY POST findings revealed that the emergency meeting, which was earlier scheduled to take place around 12:00 noon, was rescheduled to 9am and a venue known only to those who are in support of the impeachment.
The impeachment was signed by 20 House of Assembly members out of 30 members of the state House of Assembly.
Those impeached include: the speaker Hon. Isah Idrith Gwaram, Majority leader, Sani Isiyaku as well as the Chief Whip, Aminu Sule Sankara.
Recall that on January 3, 2017,
Speaker of the Jigawa State House of Assembly, Idris Garba was sacked over alleged high-handedness and abuse of power.
Addressing journalists shortly after the impeachment process, the new speaker promised to run an open-door policy and solicited members’ support and cooperation on any decision.
He explained that his re-election for a second term as a speaker was an indication that the House has confidence in him to clear all problems in the house.
“My re-election came to me as a surprise and is an indication that the honourable House have confidence on me and the earlier allegation against me is baseless,” he said.
“I only hear this for the first time, it is only democracy that takes its cause,” he noted.

Trouble started when the Speaker of the House, Alhaji Isa Idris, announced the decision to amend the house standing rule that stipulates that all former assembly speakers and deputy speakers cannot vie for the position of speaker again in subsequent assemblies.
The proposed amended rule will also disqualify any principal officer that was suspended or impeached from recontesting for the position of speaker.
“Only ranking member with cognate legislative experience should be eligible for the election or appointment as principal officer of the House.
“Any member, who was previously impeached from the office of the speaker, deputy speaker, majority leader, minority leader, or chief whip, shall not be eligible for re-election or re-appointment as principal officer of the Jigawa State House of Assembly,” the law said.
The move to amend the 2015 House Standing Rule was viewed as an attempt by the house leadership to prevent the impeached speaker from contesting for House leadership in the forthcoming constitution of the seventh Assembly leadership.
