In a remarkable stride towards promoting democracy in Akoko, the youth-led NGO, Akoko Citizens Engage, has officially kicked off its mission. Jeremiah Babaleye, the project coordinator, emerged as a winner in the #Turnupdemocracy challenge by YIAGA Africa, supported by the UK Foreign Development Office. Trained as a community organizer, Babaleye spearheaded the project, which commenced in late November.
The journey began with a significant visit to the INEC Resident Commissioner's office, where the team met with the Head of Department for Voters Education. Following this, the dedicated team embarked on a road-to-road sensitization campaign across 10 towns in Akoko, engaging citizens in markets, palaces, and more. Their efforts aim to bridge the gap between the people and their elected representatives.
Having successfully reached approximately 1,000 individuals, including men, women, and youths, the citizens expressed their eagerness to actively participate in democracy. Common concerns revolved around the perceived unavailability of elected representatives and challenges in local government administration within their communities.
As the momentum builds, Akoko Citizens Engage is gearing up for its inaugural town hall meeting scheduled for December 15, 2023, at Akungba Town Hall. The team remains resolute in its commitment to further engage with community leaders, diligently gather the concerns of Akoko residents, and advocate for their rights at the appropriate forums.
A resounding message from Akoko Citizens Engage underscores the power vested in the people within a democracy. Emphasizing the significance of questioning and holding leaders accountable, the NGO encourages citizens to recognize and exercise their democratic influence. This marks only the initial phase of their endeavors, with plans to intensify efforts and champion the collective voice of the Akoko people.
