*Describe Him as Epitome of Excellence and Selflessness
"We Stay Committed to the University's Vision and Mission" – AAUA Vice Chancellor
Ondo State Governor and Visitor to Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko (AAUA), Hon. Lucky Aiyedatiwa, has paid glowing tribute to the late Chief Michael Adekunle Ajasin, the first Executive Governor of Ondo State.
Governor Aiyedatiwa praised Ajasin as a symbol of integrity, honesty, and selflessness, highlighting his significant contributions to education, politics, and nation-building.
The governor delivered his remarks on November 4, 2025, at the opening ceremony of the first International Conference in honour of Chief Ajasin, as part of AAUA’s 25th-anniversary celebrations.
Represented by his Special Adviser on Education, Dr. Olawumi Ilawole, Governor Aiyedatiwa spoke on the conference theme, “Education, Politics, and Nation Building: A Reflection on the Life and Philosophy of Chief Michael Adekunle Ajasin,” stressing the profound impact Ajasin had on Ondo State and Nigeria. He affirmed that his administration would continue to uphold the legacies of the state’s founding fathers.
“We are determined to sustain these legacies,” said Gov. Aiyedatiwa, citing his administration’s efforts in enhancing educational infrastructure and implementing initiatives to support human capital development. He commended AAUA for its achievements over the past 25 years, recognizing the dedication of its management, staff, and alumni to academic excellence and societal progress.
In his keynote speech, Yoruba socio-cultural leader Bashorun Sehinde Arogbofa, OFR, reflected on Chief Ajasin’s unwavering commitment to free education. He noted that Ajasin’s educational policy was driven by a genuine belief in the transformative power of education, rather than as a populist gesture.
Quoting Ajasin’s memoirs, Arogbofa said, “The free education scheme was not a mere populist move but was rooted in the principle that ‘a sound mind in a sound body’ is essential for societal progress.” He lauded Ajasin’s pioneering role in implementing free education, first in the Western Region and later expanding it to all levels of education in Ondo State. According to Arogbofa, Ajasin’s policies provided affordable education to millions of children and paved the way for the advancement of the state’s educational standards.
Beyond education, Arogbofa highlighted Ajasin’s contributions to economic development, mentioning landmark projects such as the Okitipupa Oil Palm Company, Ondo Plywood Industry, Ile-Oluji Cocoa Industry, Ifon Ceramic Industry, and Owena Bank. He emphasized that these initiatives laid a strong foundation for the state’s industrial growth and remain a standard for visionary leadership.
AAUA Vice Chancellor, Prof. Olugbenga Ige, reaffirmed the institution’s commitment to its founding ideals of self-reliance and service to humanity. “We remain steadfast in our mission to deliver first-class research, promote knowledge creation, and uphold strong moral values,” Prof. Ige stated. He celebrated the University’s silver jubilee as a significant milestone, reflecting on its achievements and the positive impact it has made on society.
Prof. Ige expressed gratitude to Governor Aiyedatiwa for his continued support, noting, “We deeply appreciate the Governor’s unwavering backing. His presence today underscores his commitment to the University’s growth and development.” He also commended the efforts of the Local Organizing Committee, chaired by Dr. Olusanya Faboyede, for successfully coordinating the event.
The conference featured heartfelt messages from the Ajasin family, including Mrs. Jumoke Anifowose (née Ajasin) and Chief Tokunbo Ajasin, as well as presentations from distinguished scholars such as Prof. Victor Edo and Dr. N. H. Iwu. Participants engaged in vibrant discussions during plenary sessions, exploring the far-reaching impact of Chief Ajasin’s philosophies on education and governance in Nigeria.
The event served as a fitting tribute to the enduring legacy of Chief Michael Adekunle Ajasin, underscoring his timeless vision for quality education and sustainable development.
