...as Staff, ASUU, Students Criticize SSANU
The Senate of Federal University Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE) has expressed unanimous support for the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Abayomi Sunday Fasina, during its 70th meeting, passing a vote of confidence in his leadership. The Senate also strongly condemned the Senior Staff Association of Nigeria Universities (SSANU) for what it described as “baseless, unfounded, and malicious” allegations against the Vice-Chancellor.
In a related development, the FUOYE Alumni Association, along with other staff unions and student groups, rallied in defense of Professor Fasina. They dismissed SSANU’s allegations of sexual harassment, intimidation, and financial mismanagement as fabrications intended to tarnish the Vice-Chancellor’s reputation.
The coalition of unions and groups—including the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Congress of Nigerian Academics (CONUA), Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU), National Association of Academic Technologists (NAAT), and the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS)—decried SSANU’s actions as a deliberate attempt to disrupt the peace and progress achieved under Fasina’s administration over the past four years.
According to a statement released by the university’s Public Relations Officer, Mr. Foluso Ogunmodede, these groups described SSANU’s allegations as “spurious, malicious, and without merit.” They commended Professor Fasina’s transformative efforts, including infrastructural developments and academic achievements, which have elevated FUOYE’s standing on the global stage.
Speaking on behalf of the FUOYE Alumni Association, its president, Bishop Tope Arogudade, labeled SSANU’s claims as “reckless and driven by personal grievances.” Arogudade stated, “The Alumni Association stands firmly with Prof. Fasina and rejects these baseless accusations. It is unfortunate that some individuals, blinded by personal interests, have chosen to discredit a leader who has done so much to advance FUOYE’s status as a premier institution.”
He called on the university’s Governing Council, the Federal Ministry of Education, and the National Universities Commission (NUC) to dismiss SSANU’s allegations and continue to support the Vice-Chancellor in his efforts to steer the university toward greater success.
Leaders of other unions, including NASU Chairman Dr. Ademola Akinsorotan and CONUA Coordinator, also criticized SSANU’s actions, describing them as part of a coordinated effort by detractors to undermine Professor Fasina ahead of the 2025 Vice-Chancellorship contest.
“This campaign of calumny against Prof. Fasina is destined to fail,” they declared.
The university community continues to rally behind Professor Fasina, affirming its confidence in his leadership and condemning efforts to derail the progress of FUOYE.
