GTCO Transforms Lives with Waste-for-Gas Initiative, Distributes 3,000 Gas Cylinders in Obafemi Owode
In a bid to enhance household welfare and promote cleaner communities, Guaranty Trust Holding Company (GTCO) Plc has launched its Waste-for-Gas Initiative, distributing over 3,000 gas cylinders to residents of Obafemi Owode Local Government Area, Ogun State.
The initiative, unveiled over the weekend, aims to empower women and families by providing access to gas-powered cooking solutions, reducing reliance on firewood, and fostering environmental sustainability.
GTCO’s Commitment to Community Development
Speaking at the event, Group Chief Executive Officer, GTCO Plc, Mr. Segun Agbaje, emphasized the bank’s dedication to making a tangible impact beyond financial services.
“The Waste-for-Gas initiative is about making life easier for families, giving them more time to focus on important activities such as education, work, or personal development,” he said.
“Beyond this, our goal is to continuously develop sustainable initiatives that empower individuals, strengthen communities, and contribute to socioeconomic growth.”
GTCO’s Chief Communication Officer, Oyinade Adegite, explained that the initiative was carefully structured to ensure it reached those in genuine need.
“We visited various households across the local government and were surprised to find that some residents had already borrowed money just to afford gas cylinders, while others were considering doing the same,” she noted.
She urged beneficiaries to use the cylinders for their intended purpose and not resell them, adding that the initiative’s expansion would depend on how well the items are utilized.
Local Leaders Applaud Initiative
The Chairman of Obafemi Owode Local Government, Ambassador Ogunsola Adesina, lauded GTCO for its intervention, stating that it would greatly improve the standard of living in the area. He further appealed to the bank to establish a GTCO branch within the community to ease residents’ banking challenges.
Similarly, the Olu of Owode-Egba, Oba Kolawole Aremu Sowemimo, assured residents that efforts were underway to establish discounted gas refill stations within the community to ensure affordability and accessibility.
Safety Awareness and Community Response
The Iyaloja General, Chief Ganiyat Oyelakin, cautioned beneficiaries to handle the gas cookers safely to prevent accidents. Residents also received training on the proper usage and maintenance of gas cylinders.
Expressing gratitude, beneficiaries hailed GTCO for the initiative. One of them, Madam Risikat Ayoka, shared her excitement:
“We are excited. This gesture will help us stop using firewood for cooking.”
The initiative underscores GTCO’s commitment to social impact, with plans for a second phase of the program depending on the success of this initial rollout.
