President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has appointed Professor Attahiru Muhammadu Jega, former chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), as the Adviser and Coordinator of the Presidential Livestock Reform Initiative.
The announcement was made on Friday by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy. Tinubu’s decision aims to drive meaningful progress in the livestock sector, a crucial component of national development efforts.
Jega, who previously served as the Vice-Chancellor of Bayero University, Kano, co-chaired the Presidential Livestock Reform Committee alongside Tinubu. The committee proposed a series of comprehensive reforms, one of which led to the creation of the Livestock Ministry, now fully operational with an appointed minister.
A respected academic and governance expert, Jega, 68, is a member of the International Elections Advisory Council and currently serves as the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council of Sa’adatu Rimi University of Education, Kano. His tenure as INEC chairman (2010–2015) was marked by historic electoral reforms, including the introduction of biometric voter registration and the card reader system.
His new role as special adviser to President Tinubu is expected to reinforce the momentum of the ongoing livestock sector reforms, ensuring their effective implementation and sustainability.
