Former Abia State Governor and current Senator for Abia North, Orji Uzor Kalu, has emphasized the importance of the South East region remaining engaged in mainstream politics to reap its benefits.
In a recent post on his official Facebook page, Kalu revealed that President Bola Tinubu expressed dissatisfaction with receiving only 4% of the votes in Abia State during the 2023 Presidential election.
Kalu used his statement to clarify that he did not criticize Governor Alex Otti or his performance. He emphasized that he refrains from publicly discussing his successors, asserting that only the electorate has the power to determine the fate of their leaders.
“For instance, in 2019, when I joined the APC, President Buhari received 68% of the votes in our constituency. However, in 2023, President Tinubu garnered only 4% across the entire Abia, which was disappointing for him given the political landscape in Abia.
“He has friends like me, along with others, yet we could only achieve 4%. Even I find that hard to believe.
“The South East as a whole needs to align with the rest of Nigeria,” Kalu stated.
He pointed out that this low percentage is concerning, especially given the prominent figures the All Progressives Congress (APC) had in Abia during the election.
Kalu urged APC members to come together and work towards securing a victory for the party in Abia in the upcoming 2027 elections. He also mentioned that the stakeholders meeting he hosted at his residence in Abuja aimed to rally support among Abia APC members.
