Senator Magnus Abe, a prominent member of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Rivers State, has stated that the recent defection of Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, his Deputy, the entire cabinet, and former Governor Ifeanyi Okowa to the APC will significantly enhance the party’s support in the South-South region.
Abe, who is also the Chairman of the National Agency for the Great Green Wall (NAGGW), expressed this view in a statement released by his spokesperson, Parry Benson.
He characterized this political shift as a sign of the vitality of Nigeria’s democracy under the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the APC.
Senator Abe believes that democracy thrives when every citizen enjoys true freedom of association and choice.
He stated, “Under President Tinubu, Nigerians have experienced a significant increase in resources available to the states, allowing dedicated Governors to leverage this advantage for the benefit of their constituents.
“Sheriff Oborevwori and his team recognize this opportunity and have chosen to capitalize on it, bringing the people of Delta State closer to the center to expedite development. This is a positive move, and I commend him for it.”
Abe also referenced the 2007 defection of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) while he was still in office, as he ran for the presidency.
He contended that the decision by Governor Oborevwori and former Governor Okowa to join the APC is a wise one that will ultimately serve the interests of the people of Delta State.
He criticized individuals who accuse President Tinubu of fostering a one-party state, asserting that such critics should stop portraying themselves as victims.
Abe stressed that it is not the duty or obligation of President Tinubu and the APC to cultivate opposition against themselves.
Additionally, Senator Abe called on Senator Ovie Omo-Agege, Festus Keyamo, Chief Ayeni, and other APC leaders in Delta State to come together in support of Governor Oborevwori and his team, ensuring their seamless integration into the party.
He pointed out that the APC, under President Tinubu, is sufficiently broad and inclusive to welcome all Nigerians.
