Russia's top atomic official has said that US attacks on Iran's nuclear facilities have damaged the confidence that once existed in the international nuclear community.
Alexey Likhachev, the CEO of Russia's state atomic energy agency Rosatom, said on Monday that the security situation surrounding nuclear facilities in various countries has changed dramatically following attacks by Israel and the United States on Iran's nuclear sites.
"There was a shared understanding that strikes on nuclear facilities were unacceptable. That consensus was shattered in the early hours of June 22," said Likhachev, referring to Sunday morning unprovoked American aggression against peaceful Iranian nuclear sites.
"In my view, these actions have dealt a significant blow to the trust that once existed among nuclear nations," he told Russia's VGTRK TV.
The comments came after counties around the world strongly condemned US attacks on nuclear facilities in Iran's Fordow, Natanz and Isfahan regions.
The attacks came as part of US President Donald Trump's claims that he is seeking to eliminate Iran's ambitions to build nuclear weapons.
Iran has repeatedly stated that its nuclear program is completely peaceful, an assertion that has been confirmed in numerous reports published by the UN nuclear watchdog.
Iranian authorities have said that US attacks, as well as attacks carried out earlier this month by the Israeli regime on nuclear facilities in Natanz and Isfahan, were unsuccessful.
Tehran has insisted that it would continue to expand its peaceful nuclear program to respond to its scientific and energy needs.
