The Executive of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has paid a courtesy visit to Sam Maris University (SMU), Supare-Akoko in Ondo State.
Speaking during the visit, the National Director of Private Institutions Affairs, Comr. Emmanuel Amos pledged a robust collaboration with Management of the Institution for the overall interest of the
students and growth of the University.
Amos said, “We are here on a familiarization visit to this University. We’re also here to pledge our support to the institution and initiate the process for the extension of some benefits to the students of Sam Maris University.
“As a body of students, we aim to curb bullying in our educational institutions and *checkmate* exorbitant tuition fees which have become a major concern to parents and guardians of students across the country.
“We wish to reaffirm our position that education should not be a luxury—it is a fundamental right that must be made accessible, affordable and safe for all.
“In respect of the extension of the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) to students in private tertiary institutions, I am glad to inform Mr. Vice-Chancellor that NANS is optimistic that students in private institutions will soon begin to benefit from this initiative.
“This is a welcome development to the Nigerian students as it aims at providing financial relief to students for equal academic opportunities as part of the dividends of democracy.
In his response, the Vice-Chancellor of the Institution, Prof. Francis Gbore heartily welcomed the representatives of the Nigerian students to the University. He acknowledged their role in the development of education in Nigeria and wished the Executive greater accomplishments.
He assured NANS that Sam Maris University will continue to do the needful and ensure delivery of cutting-edge teaching and learning aimed at producing globally competitive graduates.
“He noted that as part of the recent development in the University to make life on campus more meaningful and academic activities more fascinating for students of the University, Management had installed solar system at its Hall of Residence.
“This development has given opportunity to our students to enjoy uninterrupted power supply aside the Mikano Generator that had earlier been installed as alternate energy which is now operated at weekends for students to meet their laundry and ironing needs” Gbore said.
