The All Progressives Congress (APC) has secured a commanding victory in the Lagos State Local Government elections held on Saturday, July 12, 2025, dominating both chairmanship and councillorship contests across the state’s 20 Local Government Areas (LGAs) and 37 Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs), according to results announced by the Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC).
The elections, conducted peacefully across 13,325 polling units, were marred by low voter turnout but recorded minimal incidents. Additional Context and Controversies
Despite the peaceful conduct, the elections faced challenges, including logistical delays and low voter turnout. In areas like Ojodu LCDA, voting started late due to the late arrival of LASIEC officials, prompting criticism from figures like Hon. James Faleke, who urged LASIEC to improve its logistics. Civil society group Enough is Enough Nigeria (EiE) raised concerns about LASIEC’s readiness, citing inadequate voter education and a delayed candidate list release (July 8 instead of July 1). Moreover, EiE noted that the July 12 election date fell outside the legal window (February 25–June 25, 2025) mandated by the Electoral Act 2022, potentially violating federal law.
Opposition parties, particularly the LP, alleged voter intimidation and campaign material destruction in strongholds like Amuwo-Odofin, though LASIEC Chairperson Justice Ayotunde Phillips (Rtd.) assured a transparent process with provisions for vulnerable groups. Posts on X also highlighted controversies, with some claiming LASIEC invalidated 80% of opposition candidates and that ballot papers in some areas only showed APC and PDP, though these claims remain unverified and inconsistent with official reports.
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu commended the peaceful process, security personnel, media, and LASIEC officials, urging calm as results were collated.
