Egypt has launched its first shipment of high-tech “mini tuber” potato seeds to Uzbekistan, marking a major step in the country’s push to become a regional hub for seed exports.
According to the Ministry of Agriculture, the export aligns with Egypt’s broader strategy to boost local seed production and expand its footprint in international agricultural markets. The move follows intensive coordination between Egyptian and Uzbek officials, including a virtual meeting with the Uzbek ambassador in Cairo to ensure all technical and regulatory requirements were met ahead of Uzbekistan’s planting season.
Mohamed El-Mensy, head of the Central Administration of Agricultural Quarantine, revealed that Egypt’s plant health unit prepared the necessary export documentation. He added that the shipment reflects a growing partnership between the two nations, especially after a high-level Uzbek delegation visited Egypt in May to explore agricultural collaboration.
The Ministry has also directed relevant agencies to facilitate ongoing cooperation through field visits, research exchanges, and continued technical support. More seed exports to Uzbekistan are reportedly in the pipeline.
