The Nigeria Institute of Architects (NIA) has urged Nigerians to always employ licensed architects to prevent building collapses and ensure structural safety.
The advice was delivered during the institute’s Award of Excellence and Meritorious Service in Architecture and Humanity, held in Osogbo under the theme: “Responsibilities in the Built Environment towards Integrated Professional Action for a Sustainable Future.”
NIA National President, Mrs Mobolaji Adeniyi, said the institute will continue to collaborate with government and non-governmental organisations to promote the critical roles of architects and advance the institute’s objectives.
Adeniyi reaffirmed the institute’s commitment to safer building practices across the country, noting that architects play a central role in ensuring sustainable structures.
“The involvement of licensed architects guarantees that building projects are executed with the right expertise and safeguards against unethical practices,” she said.
Guest speaker, Mr Abiodun Owoborode, called for robust legislation to enforce construction standards and urged professionals to refrain from unethical conduct that could endanger lives.
Deputy Governor of Osun, Mr Kola Adewusi, reiterated the state government’s dedication to smart urban development, climate-conscious housing, heritage preservation, and effective land administration. He highlighted the state’s openness to innovative designs that reduce energy consumption, produce resilient structures, and promote inclusion and safety.
Adewusi added: “Sustainability is not only about avoiding harm; it is about creating environments that enable human potential to flourish. This is why professionals are invited to collaborate with the state at every stage, from concept to construction and from policy to practice.
“Our professionals must plan beyond immediate assignments, with a vision that extends into the future, as the cities we shape today will become the heritage of tomorrow.”
In his goodwill message, the Oni of Ife, Oba Enitan Ogunwusi, described architects as leaders and custodians of the nation’s heritage. He emphasised cultural sustainability, material innovation, and professional integrity, advising architects to preserve the spirit of local culture in their designs.
“A disciplined architect must uphold accuracy, balance, and purpose, recognising that the Ori-Olokun on the NIA logo is a call to design with cultural awareness and historical respect,” he said.
