A senior German lawmaker has suggested that German troops may be deployed to Ukraine as part of a peacekeeping arrangement if a permanent ceasefire is reached with Russia.
Thomas Röwekamp, chairman of the Defence Committee in the Bundestag, said in an interview that past experiences have shown Russia’s commitments cannot be fully trusted, making strong military deterrence essential.
“That also means that German soldiers will ensure in future, after a peace agreement with Russia, that peace is maintained permanently,” Röwekamp told German broadcaster WDR.
He noted that the Bundeswehr could play a critical role in securing peace through logistics, training of Ukrainian soldiers, and air defence support. According to him, Europe must be ready to provide binding military guarantees to Ukraine to ensure lasting security.
“For Ukrainians, the question of allied security guarantees is central in any peace deal,” he said, adding that distrust toward Russia remains high after more than three years of war.
Röwekamp stressed that deterrence through a credible troop presence—alongside American forces—would be the strongest safeguard against renewed aggression from Russia.
“Ultimately, no one wants war, but the best way to prevent another confrontation is to ensure Russia knows an attack will be met with decisive resistance,” he added.
