Governor Sheriff Oborevwori calls for calm and restraint amid reports of rising tensions between Itsekiri and Urhobo

Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, has appealed for calm and mutual understanding following emerging tensions between the Itsekiri and Urhobo communities in the Warri South Local Government Area.

In a statement issued on Saturday by his Chief Press Secretary, Sir Festus Ahon, Governor Oborevwori expressed deep concern over the reports of rising friction between the two ethnic groups. He called on all parties involved, as well as the general public in the oil-rich region, to exercise restraint and avoid any actions that might escalate the situation or undermine the hard-earned peace in the area.

The governor emphasized the importance of preserving harmony among the diverse communities that make up Delta State, noting that the state's progress and development are closely tied to sustained peace and cooperation among its people. He urged traditional leaders, youth groups, community stakeholders, and political actors to work together in addressing any grievances through dialogue and lawful means rather than resorting to conflict or provocation.

“As a government, we are committed to fostering peace and ensuring that all Deltans, regardless of ethnic background, live and coexist in a secure and supportive environment,” Oborevwori stated. “We must not allow misunderstanding or disagreements to derail the stability and unity that our state has worked hard to achieve.”

Governor Oborevwori further assured residents that his administration is monitoring the situation closely and will take necessary steps to mediate any dispute and prevent violence. He also reaffirmed the government’s readiness to partner with security agencies, community leaders, and relevant stakeholders to ensure lasting peace in the affected areas.

He encouraged the media and civil society organizations to play a constructive role by promoting messages of peace, understanding, and responsible citizenship, particularly at a time when tensions could easily be inflamed by misinformation or inflammatory rhetoric.

The statement concluded with a strong appeal to the conscience of all residents in Warri South and beyond, stressing the need for unity, mutual respect, and peaceful coexistence as core values that must guide inter-ethnic relations within the state.

Delta State, known for its ethnic diversity and economic importance—particularly in the oil and gas sector—has seen relative peace in recent years, and the governor emphasized that maintaining this peace is a collective responsibility.

Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, has reiterated his administration’s unwavering commitment to improving infrastructure and promoting development in Warri, one of the state’s key economic hubs. The governor emphasized that sustained peace and stability are crucial for unlocking the city's full economic potential and ensuring the success of ongoing developmental initiatives.

In a statement made through his Chief Press Secretary, Sir Festus Ahon, Governor Oborevwori stressed that his administration is focused on revitalizing Warri’s infrastructure to attract greater investment, boost local businesses, and improve the quality of life for residents. However, he warned that no meaningful development can occur in an atmosphere of unrest or division.

“We urge all stakeholders, including residents, traditional rulers, and community leaders, to support our administration’s efforts to transform Warri into a modern and thriving city,” the governor said. “We must avoid any actions, rhetoric, or behavior that could threaten the peace and unity we have worked hard to maintain in this resource-rich area.”

Governor Oborevwori further appealed to youth groups, opinion leaders, and various ethnic communities in the region to continue fostering dialogue, cooperation, and mutual respect. He noted that Warri's diversity is one of its greatest strengths and called for collective responsibility in promoting harmony among the Itsekiri, Urhobo, and other ethnic nationalities that call the area home.

“The future of Warri depends not only on government-led infrastructure projects but also on the willingness of the people to live and work together peacefully,” he added. “Development is only possible when communities are united in purpose.”

The governor reaffirmed that his administration remains committed to inclusive governance, ensuring that all parts of Delta State, regardless of ethnicity or geography, benefit from developmental policies and public services. He emphasized that fairness, equity, and justice would continue to guide the state’s approach to governance and infrastructure distribution.

To maintain law and order, Governor Oborevwori assured residents that security agencies have been mobilized and are working diligently to ensure peace and prevent any form of violence or unrest. He encouraged citizens to cooperate with security personnel and report any suspicious activities that could threaten public safety.

He concluded by urging everyone to prioritize unity and peace as foundations for progress, not just in Warri, but across Delta State.
