The New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) has criticised the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for failing to upload the names of its current national executive on the commission’s website, despite court orders affirming the party’s leadership.
In a statement issued on Friday, NNPP National Secretary Ogini Olaposi accused INEC of disregarding binding judicial pronouncements that recognised Dr. Agbo Major as the party’s National Chairman and himself as National Secretary. He noted that the delay, now subject to a third formal reminder, is hindering the party’s nationwide operations and preparation for upcoming elections.
“This marks the third reminder to INEC, despite its participation in the legal proceedings that culminated in the April 3, 2025, judgment of the FCT High Court,” the statement read. “This judgment, alongside that of the Abia State High Court, remains valid and binding.”
The party warned that INEC’s inaction is emboldening expelled members who continue to claim leadership, undermining party unity and the democratic process. It accused the commission of “administrative negligence” and warned that its conduct could weaken public confidence in Nigeria’s electoral system.
According to the NNPP, the situation has allowed its former presidential candidate, Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso, and his Kwankwasiya movement to make divisive political statements under the party’s banner, despite the cancellation of their alliance. The party insisted that INEC could easily end the confusion by complying with the court’s directive.
The NNPP said it has repeatedly written to the commission, most recently on July 30, warning that it will pursue contempt proceedings and other legal measures if the delay persists.
“Democracy cannot survive if those charged with protecting it continue to undermine honour and integrity,” the statement concluded. “Enough is enough. Nigerians deserve better, and we shall not relent in defending the integrity of our party and the sanctity of our democracy.”
