President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has relieved Dr Nkiruka Madueke of her duties as the pioneer Director General of the National Council on Climate Change (NCCC), just over a year after her appointment.

A statement issued by Presidential Spokesperson, Bayo Onanuga, confirmed the President’s approval of Mrs Omotenioye Majekodunmi as the new Director General of the Council.
Madueke, who assumed the role in June 2024 following the formal establishment of the NCCC, will be succeeded by Majekodunmi, described in the statement as a seasoned climate finance expert and environmental lawyer with more than 17 years of experience.
Majekodunmi’s background includes work with both international and domestic institutions on renewable energy, carbon markets, and climate governance. She previously held the position of Financial Adviser to the NCCC, where she was instrumental in shaping Nigeria’s climate strategies and international collaborations.
The Presidency acknowledged Dr Madueke’s service and praised the groundwork she laid for the Council’s development. Majekodunmi’s appointment, the statement noted, is intended to consolidate progress and align with the Tinubu administration’s broader climate ambitions.
“Her selection reflects this government’s determination to address climate change as an environmental priority and as a lever for sustainable economic advancement, national resilience, and inclusive growth,” the statement concluded.
