Armed men on Wednesday morning attacked a police checkpoint in Egbe, Yagba West Local Government Area of Kogi State, killing three officers.
The incident happened in the border community between Kogi and Kwara states.
Witnesses said the gunmen opened fire on the officers in a fierce exchange before seizing their weapons.
“The attackers came for their guns, which they carted away. Three officers died in the exchange of fire,” a source said.
Clips shared online also showed vehicles believed to have been used by the assailants as they escaped.
The Kogi assault occurred hours after another violent raid in Bokungi, Tsaragi community of Edu Local Government Area in Kwara State, where one person was killed and hundreds of cattle rustled.
The late-night invasion was directed at Fulani settlements belonging to Alhaji Garuba and Alhaji Mumini.
Residents said the attackers arrived around midnight, shooting into the air to scare locals before making away with close to 1,000 cows.
In the process, Mumini’s eldest son, Muhammadu, who recently got married, was shot dead.
A local source added that the attackers, after failing to break into Garuba’s house, carted away all his livestock.
“They came through Bokungi, firing into the air. Everyone ran for safety. They moved nearly 700 cows and passed through Fengewa before soldiers and vigilantes attempted to intercept them,” the source said.
Villagers later accused security agencies of failing to make what they called a “genuine effort” to repel the raid.
