Russia carried out a large-scale overnight missile and drone assault on Kyiv and other Ukrainian regions on December 27, 2025, killing at least two people and wounding dozens in one of the year's most intense barrages. The attack, involving nearly 500 drones and 40 missiles, targeted energy infrastructure and residential areas, leaving parts of the capital without power and heat amid freezing temperatures. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky described it as Russia's "answer" to ongoing peace efforts, coming less than 24 hours before his scheduled meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump in Florida to discuss a potential framework to end the nearly four-year war.
Zelensky, en route to the U.S., accused Moscow of showing its true intentions through violence rather than diplomacy. "Russian representatives engage in lengthy talks, but in reality, Kinzhals and ‘shaheds’ speak for them," he posted on social media, referring to ballistic missiles and Iranian-supplied drones. He reported the assault lasted nearly 10 hours, primarily hitting civilian and energy facilities, and called for stronger international pressure on Russia.
Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko and regional authorities confirmed explosions across the city, with air defenses active. At least one woman was killed, and over 30 people wounded, including children. Power outages affected a third of the capital, exacerbating winter hardships.
The strikes coincide with intensified U.S.-mediated diplomacy. Zelensky announced on December 26 that he would meet Trump on December 28 in Florida to refine a 20-point peace plan, described as "90% ready." Discussions focus on territorial issues (particularly Donbas), security guarantees, and economic arrangements. Zelensky has signaled flexibility, including on NATO aspirations and demilitarized zones, while insisting on legally binding protections against future aggression. Trump has expressed optimism for a "good" meeting but cautioned that any deal requires his approval.
European leaders, coordinated remotely, support the process but emphasize Ukraine's sovereignty. No direct EU participation is expected in the Florida talks.
The attack underscores persistent challenges: Russia demands Ukrainian withdrawal from contested areas and NATO renunciation, while Kyiv seeks frozen lines and robust guarantees. Zelensky warned that rejection of the framework would necessitate escalated pressure on Moscow.
Humanitarian impacts remain severe, with ongoing strikes damaging infrastructure, increasing emissions from emergency generators, and hindering reconstruction. Environmental groups note worsened climate resilience and food insecurity in affected regions.
As talks approach, the barrage highlights the fragile path to peace amid continued battlefield escalation.
