Governor Sheriff Oborevwori Mourns Passing of Veteran DBS Broadcaster Vivian Nkechika

Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, has expressed deep sorrow and heartfelt condolences over the sudden and tragic death of Miss Vivian Nkechika, a respected presenter and Assistant Manager in the Programmes Department of Delta Broadcasting Service (DBS), Asaba.

Miss Nkechika, an indigene of Ekwuoma in Ika North East Local Government Area, reportedly passed away on Wednesday, February 4, 2026, following complications arising from a domestic gas explosion. The news of her demise has sent shockwaves through the media community and beyond, coming as a devastating blow to colleagues, listeners, viewers, and the broader journalism profession in Delta State.

In a condolence message issued in Asaba by his Chief Press Secretary, Sir Festus Ahon, Governor Oborevwori described the late broadcaster’s death as a profound loss to her family, the media fraternity, DBS Asaba, the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Delta State Council, and society at large.

The Governor paid glowing tribute to Miss Vivian Nkechika, portraying her as a committed, diligent, and principled professional whose career was defined by ethical conduct, a strong sense of duty, and genuine passion for public service through journalism.

He highlighted her unwavering dedication to factual reporting, public education, and responsible broadcasting, qualities that made her voice a trusted source of information and enlightenment for audiences across Delta State. Her distinctive style, professionalism, and commitment to accuracy endeared her to both colleagues and the listening and viewing public, earning her widespread respect and admiration within the media landscape.

Governor Oborevwori stated:

“This is a moment of deep sadness. Delta State has lost a vibrant and principled media practitioner whose voice contributed immensely to informing and enlightening the public. Her sudden departure is a profound loss to her family, the media fraternity, and all who value credible journalism.”

The Governor extended his sympathies to all those grieving her passing, including:

  • Her immediate family and loved ones
  • The management and staff of Delta Broadcasting Service, Asaba
  • Media practitioners across Delta State
  • The leadership and members of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Delta State Council

He acknowledged the immense pain and sense of irreplaceable void her death has created, particularly in the Programmes Department where she served with distinction for many years.

Governor Oborevwori prayed earnestly for divine comfort and strength for everyone mourning her loss. He asked God to grant her family, friends, and colleagues the fortitude to bear the grief and to uphold the legacy of excellence, integrity, and dedication she represented throughout her career.

“Our hearts go out to all who mourn her passing. May God comfort everyone she left behind and grant her eternal peace,” the Governor said.

The passing of Vivian Nkechika adds to the recent wave of losses within the Delta media community, following earlier tributes from other public figures including Commissioner Charles Aniagwu, who also described her as a consummate professional whose distinctive voice and ethical standards left an indelible mark on broadcasting in the state.

Miss Nkechika’s sudden exit at a time when her experience and mentorship were still greatly needed has left many in the industry reflecting on the fragility of life and the importance of valuing those who dedicate their careers to informing, educating, and shaping public discourse.

As preparations begin for her final farewell, the thoughts and prayers of the government and people of Delta State remain with her family, colleagues at DBS Asaba, and the wider journalism family during this difficult period.

Governor Sheriff Oborevwori’s message underscores the high regard in which Vivian Nkechika was held—not only as a broadcaster but as a vital contributor to the social and informational fabric of Delta State.

May her soul rest in perfect peace, and may her legacy of professionalism, passion, and public service continue to inspire the next generation of media practitioners in Delta State and beyond.
