MAIDUGURI — The Borno State Police Command has confirmed that 23 people were killed and 108 others injured following multiple coordinated suicide bomb attacks in Maiduguri on Monday evening.
According to a statement by police spokesperson Nahum Kenneth Daso, the explosions occurred at about 7:24 p.m. on March 16, 2026, targeting crowded and strategic locations across the city. The affected sites include the Maiduguri Monday Market, the gate of the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital, and the Post Office Flyover Maiduguri.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the attacks were carried out by suspected suicide bombers using improvised explosive devices (IEDs). Authorities described the incidents as coordinated, suggesting a planned effort to inflict maximum casualties in high-traffic areas.
Emergency response teams were immediately activated following the blasts. A joint deployment of police tactical units, military personnel, and other security operatives secured and cordoned off the affected locations. The police Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) unit conducted thorough sweep operations to ensure no additional explosive devices remained in the area.
Victims were evacuated by responders including the National Emergency Management Agency and the Borno State Emergency Management Agency to nearby medical facilities, where the injured are currently receiving treatment.
The Commissioner of Police, Naziru Abdulmajid, visited the affected sites to assess the situation and oversee response efforts. He expressed condolences to victims and their families and reassured residents of the command’s commitment to protecting lives and property.
“Regrettably, a total of twenty-three persons lost their lives, while one hundred and eight others sustained varying degrees of injuries,” the police statement said.
Authorities stated that normalcy has since been restored in the affected areas, while security presence has been intensified across Maiduguri and its surroundings to prevent further incidents. Surveillance and patrols have been increased as investigations continue.
The police urged residents to remain calm but vigilant and to report any suspicious activity or objects to security agencies. Emergency contact lines have also been provided to assist with rapid response.
The attacks highlight ongoing security challenges in northeastern Nigeria, where insurgent groups have previously targeted civilian populations and public spaces. Officials say efforts are underway to identify those responsible and bring them to justice.
The Borno State Police Command commended residents for their cooperation and resilience, reiterating its commitment to maintaining peace and security in the state.
