Several people are feared dead following a devastating explosion that struck the Woro community in Kaiama Local Government Area of Kwara State in the early hours of Monday, March 23, intensifying fears among residents already grappling with repeated security threats.
According to multiple local sources, the explosion occurred at dawn, sending shockwaves across the rural settlement and forcing residents to flee their homes in panic. Eyewitness accounts indicate that the blast was sudden and powerful, leaving destruction in its wake and plunging the community into chaos.
A resident who spoke on condition of anonymity revealed that the explosion is believed to have been triggered by an Improvised Explosive Device (IED), allegedly planted by suspected terrorists. The device reportedly detonated when a vehicle unknowingly drove over it, resulting in fatal consequences. However, the exact number of casualties remains unclear as of the time of filing this report.
“There was an explosion around Woro this morning. The blast claimed lives, but we cannot say exactly how many at this point,” the source said. “A car drove over what we believe was an IED planted by members of Boko Haram.”
The incident has heightened tensions in the area, with many residents expressing fears of further attacks. Community members say they are living under constant threat, as suspected terrorist groups continue to target vulnerable settlements in the region.
Another resident, identified as Aliyu Yahuza, described the security situation as dire and worsening. He lamented that the presence of suspected terrorists has turned daily life into a struggle for survival, with villagers constantly anticipating the next attack.
“People here no longer sleep with both eyes closed,” Yahuza said. “We are always afraid because these terrorists can strike at any time. This latest explosion has made things even worse.”
The latest tragedy comes barely weeks after a deadly assault on the same community earlier in the year. On February 3, Woro community was attacked by armed men suspected to be terrorists, resulting in the killing of more than 20 residents. The attack also led to the abduction of at least 176 people, including women and children, marking one of the most severe incidents in the area in recent times.
Sources within the community disclosed that the attackers had subsequently issued threats of additional violence, warning residents of more attacks if their demands were not met. The terrorists reportedly demanded a ransom of N20 million for each abducted victim, further compounding the distress of affected families.
In the aftermath of both the February attack and the recent explosion, many residents have been displaced, with homes destroyed and livelihoods disrupted. Public infrastructure in the area has also suffered significant damage, leaving the community in urgent need of humanitarian assistance.
Local leaders and concerned citizens are calling on the government and security agencies to urgently intervene and restore peace to the troubled region. They stress the need for increased security presence, intelligence gathering, and proactive measures to prevent further loss of lives and property.
As of now, authorities are yet to release an official statement confirming the details of the explosion or the number of casualties. Emergency responders are reportedly making efforts to assess the situation and provide aid to victims.
The recurring violence in Kaiama Local Government Area highlights the growing insecurity in parts of Nigeria, particularly in rural communities where security presence is often limited. Residents say they feel abandoned and vulnerable, urging swift action to address the escalating crisis.
While investigations into the latest explosion continue, the people of Woro remain gripped by fear and uncertainty, hoping for protection and relief amid an increasingly volatile security landscape.
