Former governorship candidate in Kano State, Nasiru Yusuf Gawuna, has officially defected to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), in a move that adds momentum to the wave of political realignments ahead of future electoral contests.
Gawuna completed his registration into the ADC on Tuesday at his Gawuna Ward in Nasarawa Local Government Area of Kano State, where a large crowd of supporters, political associates, and party faithful gathered to witness the event. The ceremony, which attracted notable political figures, underscored the significance of his defection within the state’s political landscape.
The former deputy governor of Kano State was formally issued his membership card during the exercise, marking his full transition into the ADC. The event was attended by key stakeholders, including former Kano State governor, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso; the immediate past deputy governor, Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo; and the Kano State chairman of the ADC, Musa Ungogo, among others.
Speaking shortly after completing his registration, Gawuna expressed gratitude to his supporters for their loyalty and steadfastness throughout his political journey. He noted that their continued support had been instrumental in shaping his career and encouraged them to remain committed as he embarks on a new political chapter.
He assured leaders and members of the ADC of his readiness to contribute meaningfully to the growth and consolidation of the party in Kano State. According to him, strengthening the party’s structure across all levels will be a key priority moving forward.
Gawuna also pledged to work closely with other stakeholders to expand the ADC’s presence at the grassroots level, stressing the importance of inclusiveness and collaboration in building a formidable political platform.
His defection comes just days after he formally resigned from the All Progressives Congress (APC), the platform under which he previously contested for the governorship of Kano State. In a resignation letter dated March 29, 2026, and addressed to his ward chairman, Gawuna described his decision to leave the APC as a personal one.
In the letter, he expressed appreciation to the party for the opportunities it afforded him over the years, noting that his time in the APC played a significant role in shaping his political trajectory. He acknowledged the platform as one that enabled him to serve and contribute to governance at various levels.
Gawuna’s political career has been marked by several high-profile roles, including his tenure as Deputy Governor of Kano State. His experience in governance and public service has positioned him as a key figure within the state’s political space.
Prior to his defection, he also stepped down from his position as Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria (FMBN). His resignation from the federal appointment took effect on March 31, 2026.
The move followed a directive issued by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, mandating political appointees with electoral ambitions to resign in compliance with the provisions of the Electoral Act. The directive is widely seen as part of efforts to ensure fairness and prevent conflicts of interest as political activities begin to intensify ahead of future elections.
Reacting to his resignation from the federal role, Gawuna expressed gratitude to President Tinubu for the opportunity to serve at the national level. He described his experience in public office as both an honour and a privilege, noting that it provided him with valuable insights into governance and administration.
He also highlighted his previous appointment as Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council of Bayero University, Kano, describing it as part of his broader contributions to public service and institutional development.
Political observers believe Gawuna’s entry into the ADC could have significant implications for Kano State politics, given his influence and established support base. His defection is expected to boost the party’s visibility and competitiveness in a state known for its vibrant and often unpredictable political dynamics.
The presence of prominent figures at his registration event has also fueled speculation about potential alliances and shifting political alignments within Kano. Analysts note that such developments could reshape the balance of power among major political parties in the state.
As the political landscape continues to evolve, Gawuna’s move reflects a broader trend of repositioning among politicians seeking new platforms and opportunities ahead of upcoming electoral cycles.
For the ADC, the addition of a seasoned politician like Gawuna represents a strategic gain, particularly in Kano State where political influence is highly contested. For Gawuna, the defection signals a fresh start and a renewed effort to pursue his political ambitions under a different banner.
With preparations for future elections gradually taking shape, attention will now turn to how effectively he integrates into the ADC and the role he will play in shaping the party’s fortunes in Kano and beyond.
