Veteran Hollywood actress Valerie Perrine, best known for her Oscar-nominated role in Lenny and her appearance in the Superman film series, has died at the age of 82.
Perrine passed away on Monday, March 23, in Beverly Hills, according to a statement released by her close friend, Stacey Souther. Her death marks the end of a decades-long career in film and television, during which she earned recognition for her talent, charisma, and memorable on-screen presence.
Souther announced the news in an emotional post on Facebook, paying tribute to Perrine’s strength and resilience, particularly during her long battle with Parkinson’s disease. She described the late actress as an inspiration who remained positive despite the challenges she faced.
“It is with deep sadness that I share the heartbreaking news that Valerie has passed away,” Souther wrote. “She faced Parkinson’s disease with incredible courage and compassion, never once complaining. She was a true inspiration who lived life to the fullest—and what a magnificent life it was. The world feels less beautiful without her in it.”
Perrine had been living with Parkinson’s disease since her diagnosis in 2015, a condition that progressively affected her health over the years. Despite this, those close to her say she maintained a strong spirit and continued to inspire those around her.
In her tribute, Souther also revealed that Perrine’s final wish was to be laid to rest at Forest Lawn Memorial Park. However, she noted that the financial strain of managing a long-term illness had exhausted the actress’s resources, prompting an appeal for public support to fulfill her burial wishes.
“Please consider donating, sharing, and helping spread the word for her funeral GoFundMe,” Souther added. “Her final wish is to be laid to rest at Forest Lawn Cemetery, but after more than 15 years of fighting Parkinson’s, her finances are exhausted. Let’s come together to make her last wish a reality—she truly deserves it.”
Perrine rose to prominence in the 1970s, earning critical acclaim for her portrayal of Honey Bruce in Lenny, directed by Bob Fosse. Her performance in the biographical drama about comedian Lenny Bruce earned her an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress, cementing her place in Hollywood history.
She later gained widespread recognition for her role as Eve Teschmacher, the girlfriend of villain Lex Luthor, in the Superman films directed by Richard Donner. Her performance brought a unique blend of charm and wit to the character, making her a fan favorite in the franchise.
Throughout her career, Perrine appeared in numerous films and television productions, showcasing her versatility as an actress. Her contributions to the entertainment industry left a lasting impression on audiences and colleagues alike.
Her death has sparked an outpouring of tributes from fans and members of the film community, many of whom remember her not only for her performances but also for her kindness and resilience in the face of illness.
As arrangements are made to honor her final wishes, Perrine is being remembered as a talented actress whose legacy will endure through her work and the lives she touched.
