The Chief Press Secretary to the Governor of Delta State, Sir Festus Ahon, has described the recently concluded South-South Zonal Congress of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as a landmark event that showcased unity, consolidation, and renewed political strength across the region.
Speaking with journalists after the congress, Ahon expressed gratitude for what he called the peaceful and successful conduct of the exercise, noting that it marked a turning point in the political alignment of the South-South zone.
According to him, the congress signals a new phase of cooperation among political leaders in the region, with a shared commitment to advancing collective interests under a common platform.
“This is a congress of unity and consolidation. After a very long time, the South-South zone is coming together under one political party to actualize the aspirations and dreams of the people,” Ahon said.
He commended governors and key stakeholders for their roles in fostering collaboration and ensuring the success of the congress, describing their efforts as a demonstration of political maturity and foresight ahead of future elections.
Ahon further noted that the alignment of South-South states with the ruling APC at the federal level presents opportunities for increased development and stronger representation in national affairs. He emphasized the strategic importance of the region, particularly given its significant contribution to Nigeria’s economy.
“As a zone that contributes significantly to the nation’s economy, it is only proper that we align with the government at the center to maximize opportunities for development of the region,” he stated.
The governor’s spokesman also used the occasion to call on the newly elected zonal executives to sustain the spirit of unity achieved during the congress. He urged them to prioritize peace, cooperation, and inclusiveness as they steer the affairs of the party in the region.
“They must work in unity and ensure that peace and harmony prevail. It is only through unity that we can achieve our collective goals and deliver the zone politically,” he added.
Highlighting the scale of participation, Ahon pointed out that the congress attracted a wide range of political figures, including governors from across the South-South, the Senate President, members of the House of Representatives, state lawmakers, and other influential stakeholders.
He said the presence of such high-profile leaders reflects growing cohesion within the region and demonstrates a collective determination to strengthen the APC’s position ahead of future political contests.
Observers have described the congress as a significant milestone for the ruling party in the South-South, a region historically characterized by diverse political affiliations. The event is seen as part of broader efforts to consolidate political influence and build a unified front.
The congress concluded peacefully, with participants expressing optimism about the party’s prospects and the potential for increased collaboration among stakeholders in the region.
Ahon’s remarks reinforce the broader narrative emerging from the event—that unity and strategic alignment will play a crucial role in shaping the political future of the South-South and enhancing its influence within Nigeria’s national framework.
