President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved a new round of appointments into key federal agencies, naming a new Chairman for the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) and nominating seven commissioners for the National Population Commission (NPC), in what the Presidency describes as a strategic move to strengthen governance and institutional effectiveness.
The appointments were announced on Monday in an official statement issued by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga. According to the statement, the latest decisions form part of ongoing efforts by the administration to reposition critical government agencies for improved service delivery and policy implementation.
At the Corporate Affairs Commission, former senator Dr. Ibrahim Ida has been appointed as the new Chairman. The Presidency highlighted his extensive experience in finance, public administration, and legislative affairs as key factors that informed his selection for the role.
“President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has appointed Sen. Dr Ibrahim Ida as Chairman of the Corporate Affairs Commission and nominated seven people to fill vacant commissioner positions at the National Population Commission,” the statement read in part.
Providing further details on his qualifications, the Presidency noted that Ida holds a Master of Science degree in Banking and Finance from the University of Ibadan, as well as a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) degree from the University of Abuja. His academic background, combined with years of experience in both public service and politics, is expected to enhance leadership at the CAC.
Dr. Ida previously represented Katsina Central Senatorial District in the National Assembly following his election in 2017. Before his time in the Senate, he served as Commissioner of Finance in Katsina State, where he played a key role in managing the state’s fiscal policies and economic planning.
In addition to his political career, Ida also built a reputation within the civil service, having served as a Permanent Secretary in the Federal Civil Service. His administrative expertise and understanding of government operations are seen as valuable assets in overseeing the affairs of the CAC, an agency responsible for regulating and managing corporate entities in Nigeria.
In a related development, President Tinubu has nominated seven individuals to fill existing vacancies at the National Population Commission, a body tasked with managing demographic data and conducting population censuses across the country. The nominations have been forwarded to the National Assembly for confirmation, in line with constitutional requirements.
The nominees include Kolawole Oladipupo Alabi from Ekiti State, Nasiru Mu’azu from Zamfara State, Usman Abubakar Tuggar from Bauchi State, Dr. Isaka Alada Yahaya from Kwara State, Professor Sadiq Isah Radda from Katsina State, Suleiman Umar from Jigawa State, and Honourable Chiso Abdullahi Dattijo from Sokoto State.
According to the Presidency, the nominations are aimed at strengthening the commission by filling critical gaps and complementing the work of the current federal commissioners already serving in the agency. The move is expected to boost the commission’s capacity to carry out its mandate, particularly as Nigeria prepares for future population and housing census exercises.
Observers note that an effective and well-staffed National Population Commission is essential for national planning, resource allocation, and policy development, given the importance of accurate demographic data in governance.
Beyond the CAC and NPC, the President also approved additional appointments across other federal institutions. In one such move, Dr. Yusuf Mohammed from Kano State has been appointed as Chairman of the Federal Polytechnic, Kaltungo. The appointment is seen as part of broader efforts to strengthen leadership within the country’s tertiary education system.
Similarly, Bala Bello has been confirmed as Special Adviser to the President on Political Economy, a role that places him at the center of economic policy discussions and political strategy within the administration.
Bello, an indigene of Kebbi State, brings significant experience in financial management and economic policy to his new position. He holds a degree in Accounting and a Master of Business Administration from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria.
Prior to this appointment, he served as Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, where he was involved in shaping monetary policy and overseeing critical aspects of the nation’s financial system. He also previously worked as Executive Director (Corporate Services) at the Nigerian Export-Import Bank between 2017 and 2022, further strengthening his credentials in both public and financial sector management.
The Presidency expressed confidence in the capacity of all the newly appointed and nominated officials to deliver effectively in their respective roles. It emphasized that the appointments were carefully made to align with the administration’s broader agenda of economic reform, institutional strengthening, and national development.
“These appointments are part of ongoing efforts to reposition key institutions of government and ensure that competent individuals are placed in positions where they can contribute meaningfully to national progress,” the statement added.
Political analysts view the latest appointments as part of a wider strategy by the Tinubu administration to consolidate governance structures while also preparing institutions to meet emerging challenges. They note that effective leadership across agencies such as the CAC and NPC is critical to achieving transparency, economic growth, and data-driven policymaking.
As the nominees to the National Population Commission await screening and confirmation by the National Assembly, attention will also be focused on how the new appointees settle into their roles and begin to implement the administration’s policy direction.
The developments underscore the administration’s continued effort to recalibrate its governance team, ensuring that key agencies are equipped with leadership capable of driving reforms and delivering results for Nigerians.
