17 Feared Dead as Gunmen Attack Benue Community on Easter Sunday

No fewer than 17 people have been reported killed following a fresh attack by suspected armed assailants on a community in Benue State, deepening concerns over persistent insecurity in parts of Nigeria’s Middle Belt region.

The incident occurred on Sunday, April 5, in Mbalom community, located in Gwer East Local Government Area of Benue State, coinciding with Easter celebrations observed by many residents. Local sources said the attack happened without warning, leaving villagers with little time to escape as gunmen reportedly stormed the area and opened fire indiscriminately.

Eyewitness accounts indicate that the attackers invaded the community in the early hours, shooting at residents and setting several houses ablaze. The sudden violence forced many villagers to flee into nearby bushes and surrounding areas in a desperate attempt to save their lives.

Residents described scenes of panic and confusion as families became separated while trying to escape. Several persons are still unaccounted for as local search and rescue efforts continue, raising fears that the death toll could increase.

“This is heartbreaking. People were caught unawares. Many are still missing,” one resident told reporters, reflecting the anxiety and grief currently gripping the community.

The latest killings have once again drawn attention to recurring violent attacks in rural parts of Benue State, particularly farming communities that have faced repeated security challenges in recent years. Many residents depend heavily on agriculture for survival, and frequent attacks have disrupted farming activities, displaced families, and heightened humanitarian concerns.

Reacting to the development, Benue State Governor Hyacinth Alia strongly condemned the attack, describing the killings as “heinous” and unacceptable. In a statement issued through his Chief Press Secretary, Tersoo Kula, the governor expressed condolences to families who lost loved ones and assured residents that the perpetrators would be brought to justice.

Governor Alia said the state government remained committed to protecting lives and property, adding that authorities were working closely with security agencies to track down those responsible for the violence. He also noted what he described as a troubling pattern of targeted attacks affecting some communities across the state.

The governor commended security operatives for their response so far but urged them to intensify efforts to apprehend the attackers and prevent further incidents. He assured residents that additional security measures would be introduced to strengthen protection in vulnerable communities.

Sunday’s attack has revived painful memories in Mbalom, a community that has previously experienced similar violence. In April 2018, suspected herders attacked a Catholic church in the same area during a morning Mass, killing two priests alongside several worshippers. That incident drew national outrage and highlighted the growing security challenges facing rural communities in Benue.

Observers say the latest assault mirrors the earlier tragedy, with reports of killings, destruction of homes, and mass displacement of residents. Many families are now said to be taking refuge in neighbouring communities and temporary shelters as fear spreads across the area.

Across Benue State, recurring attacks have continued to disrupt livelihoods, particularly among farming populations who rely on stable conditions to cultivate crops and sustain local food supply chains. Community leaders have repeatedly called for stronger security presence and long-term solutions to address the underlying causes of violence.

Security authorities confirmed that investigations into the latest incident are ongoing. Operatives have reportedly been deployed to the affected area to restore calm and begin tracking those behind the attack. Officials say intelligence gathering and search operations are underway as part of efforts to prevent further escalation.

The renewed violence has also reignited broader conversations about rural security, community protection strategies, and the need for coordinated responses involving federal, state, and local authorities. Analysts warn that continued attacks could worsen displacement and deepen humanitarian challenges if urgent interventions are not implemented.

As residents mourn their dead and search for missing relatives, community leaders have appealed for increased security patrols and emergency support for displaced families. Humanitarian concerns remain high, with many victims reportedly losing homes, food supplies, and personal belongings during the attack.

Authorities have urged residents to remain calm and cooperate with security agencies as investigations continue. Meanwhile, the tragic events in Mbalom add to the growing list of violent incidents that have underscored the fragile security situation in parts of Benue State and the urgent need for sustained peacebuilding efforts.
