The All Progressives Congress has suffered another setback in Kano State following the resignation of a prominent political figure, Kabiru Ibrahim Gaya.
Gaya’s exit adds to the growing list of high-profile defections within the party, particularly in northern Nigeria, and has sparked fresh concerns about the stability of the APC in Kano, a state widely regarded as one of the party’s traditional strongholds.
The former governor, who also represented Kano South Senatorial District in the Senate from 2015 to 2023, officially announced his resignation in a letter addressed to his ward chairman in Gaya Arewa.
In the letter, Gaya stated that his decision followed careful reflection and consultations with stakeholders and supporters across his constituency.
“I hereby formally tender my resignation from the All Progressive Congress (APC) effective today, 5th April 2026.
“It has been an honour to serve under the platform of the party, particularly during my tenure as a Senator (2015–2023). I remain grateful for the support, trust, and opportunities given to me during this period.
“However, after careful reflection and wide consultation, I have come to the considered conclusion that it is in the best interest of my constituents and my personal convictions to step aside from the party at this time. I extend my sincere gratitude to the party for the platform it provided me and for the cooperation and camaraderie extended over the years,” Gaya stated.
Although he did not immediately reveal his next political move, sources within Kano political circles suggest that his resignation could signal a potential realignment with Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso ahead of upcoming political contests.
Gaya’s political career spans several decades, during which he held significant positions at both state and national levels. His departure is widely viewed as a major blow to the APC’s grassroots structure in Kano, particularly in his local government area where he maintains strong political influence and loyalty.
Party officials in the state are yet to release an official statement regarding the development. However, insiders indicate that party leadership may need to act swiftly to prevent further defections and maintain unity within its ranks.
Political analysts say the development reflects ongoing internal challenges within the APC, especially in northern states where disagreements over party direction, leadership, and political strategy have continued to surface.
The resignation also comes amid growing political realignments in the region, as key figures reposition ahead of future elections, raising concerns about the APC’s strength in Kano and across northern Nigeria.
