Senator Ede Dafinone, the senator representing Delta Central Senatorial District has expressed strong support for the economic reforms introduced by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, stating that although the policies may currently be unpopular, they are necessary steps toward long-term national growth and stability.
Dafinone made these remarks while speaking as the Guest of Honour at the third edition of the Advocate Newspapers Lecture Series, held at Wetland Hotel in Ughelli, Delta State. The event brought together a wide array of stakeholders, including political figures, media professionals, and members of the public, all of whom gathered to discuss pressing issues surrounding governance and democratic accountability in Nigeria.
Addressing the audience, the senator acknowledged that Nigeria’s economy is currently facing significant challenges, many of which have been exacerbated by recent policy decisions. According to Dafinone, President Tinubu has demonstrated political courage by implementing reforms that previous administrations hesitated to undertake. “President Tinubu has chosen to make tough decisions, even at the cost of his popularity,” Dafinone said. “The removal of fuel subsidy is a clear example. Many leaders before him avoided it because of the potential backlash, but he took that step because he believes it is necessary for Nigeria’s long-term development.”
The senator further emphasized that while the immediate effects of such policies may be painful for citizens—manifesting in higher living costs and economic uncertainty—the long-term benefits are expected to outweigh the short-term discomfort.
