Economic Reforms: Dafinone Says Tinubu Making Hard Choices for Nigeria’s Future

Senator Ede Dafinone, the senator representing Delta Central Senatorial District has expressed strong support for the economic reforms introduced by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, stating that although the policies may currently be unpopular, they are necessary steps toward long-term national growth and stability.

Dafinone made these remarks while speaking as the Guest of Honour at the third edition of the Advocate Newspapers Lecture Series, held at Wetland Hotel in Ughelli, Delta State. The event brought together a wide array of stakeholders, including political figures, media professionals, and members of the public, all of whom gathered to discuss pressing issues surrounding governance and democratic accountability in Nigeria.

Addressing the audience, the senator acknowledged that Nigeria’s economy is currently facing significant challenges, many of which have been exacerbated by recent policy decisions. However, he maintained that such measures, though difficult and often met with public resistance, are critical for repositioning the country’s economic trajectory.

According to Dafinone, President Tinubu has demonstrated political courage by implementing reforms that previous administrations hesitated to undertake. He specifically highlighted the removal of fuel subsidy as one of the boldest decisions made by the current administration, noting that it was a long-standing issue that had strained the nation’s finances for years.

“President Tinubu has chosen to make tough decisions, even at the cost of his popularity,” Dafinone said. “The removal of fuel subsidy is a clear example. Many leaders before him avoided it because of the potential backlash, but he took that step because he believes it is necessary for Nigeria’s long-term development.”

The senator further emphasized that while the immediate effects of such policies may be painful for citizens—manifesting in higher living costs and economic uncertainty—the long-term benefits are expected to outweigh the short-term discomfort. He expressed optimism that Nigerians would begin to see tangible improvements in the near future, particularly in areas such as infrastructure development, fiscal stability, and investment inflows.

Dafinone’s comments come at a time when public discourse around economic reforms has intensified, with many Nigerians voicing concerns over the rising cost of living and the pace of economic recovery. Nonetheless, the lawmaker urged citizens to remain patient and supportive, stressing that meaningful transformation often requires sacrifice.

The lecture series itself, themed “From Ballot to Patronage: Why Electoral Victory Fails to Deliver Good Governance in Nigeria,” provided a platform for in-depth discussions on the disconnect between electoral success and effective governance. The theme is particularly significant as the country gradually begins to shift focus toward the 2027 general elections.

In his remarks, Dafinone commended the publisher of Advocate Newspapers, Mr. Shedrack Onitsha, for initiating the lecture series, describing it as a valuable forum for intellectual engagement and policy dialogue. He noted that such platforms are essential for fostering accountability and encouraging leaders to reflect on their responsibilities to the electorate.

The event attracted a diverse audience, including prominent figures in the media industry and veteran journalists. Among those in attendance were Abraham Ogbodo, a respected figure in Nigerian journalism; Ochuko Orogun; and Michael Ikeogwu, among others.

Participants at the event engaged in robust discussions on the challenges facing Nigeria’s democratic system, particularly the tendency for elected officials to prioritize patronage over public service. Speakers highlighted the need for institutional reforms, greater transparency, and a renewed commitment to good governance.

As Nigeria approaches another electoral cycle, the issues raised at the lecture series are expected to remain central to national conversations. Observers note that the effectiveness of current economic policies and the government’s ability to deliver on its promises will likely play a significant role in shaping voter sentiment in the coming years.

Despite the criticisms and concerns surrounding ongoing reforms, Dafinone remains confident that the Tinubu administration is on the right path. He reiterated his belief that the sacrifices being made today will pave the way for a more prosperous and sustainable future for Nigeria.

The senator called on Nigerians to maintain faith in the country’s leadership and to actively participate in dialogues that promote accountability and progress. He stressed that collective effort and understanding are essential for overcoming the nation’s current challenges and achieving long-term development goals.
