Iran has strongly condemned the seizure of one of its cargo vessels by U.S. forces, describing the action as unlawful and a violation of international norms, amid rising tensions between Tehran and Washington.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, Iran’s Foreign Ministry criticized what it called a “violent” operation by the United States targeting the Iranian-flagged commercial ship Touska. The ministry alleged that the incident occurred on Sunday and amounted to a serious breach of international law.
“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Islamic Republic of Iran strongly condemns the unlawful and violent action of the U.S. ‘terrorist army’ in attacking the Iranian commercial vessel ‘Touska,’” the statement read.
Iran further described the seizure as “a form of maritime piracy and a terrorist act,” insisting that it violated a two-week ceasefire agreement between both countries that reportedly began on April 7.
The ministry demanded the immediate release of the vessel, its crew, and assurances for the safety of their families. It also warned that Tehran would take necessary steps to protect its national interests.
“Without doubt, the Islamic Republic of Iran will use all its capacities to defend its national interests and security, and to safeguard the rights and dignity of Iranians,” the statement added, placing responsibility for any “further escalation” on the United States.
On the other hand, the United States Central Command (CENTCOM) confirmed that American naval forces intercepted and seized the Iranian-flagged cargo ship in the Gulf of Oman after it allegedly failed to comply with directives linked to an ongoing blockade.
CENTCOM stated that the operation was part of enforcement measures tied to a naval blockade of Iranian ports, which began on April 13. According to the command, multiple vessels have been stopped or redirected since the enforcement began.
U.S. officials said that, as of Monday, American forces had ordered at least 27 commercial vessels to turn back or return to Iranian ports for failing to comply with blockade protocols.
The incident marks a fresh flashpoint in the already strained relationship between Washington and Tehran, with both sides trading accusations over maritime security, sanctions enforcement, and regional influence.
Analysts warn that the seizure of the Touska could further complicate diplomatic efforts currently underway, particularly as both countries explore the possibility of renewed talks aimed at easing tensions.
The situation remains volatile, with observers closely monitoring developments in the Gulf region, where strategic waterways like the Gulf of Oman continue to play a critical role in global trade and energy transportation.
