Former Kano State governor, Rabiu Kwankwaso, has declared his commitment to securing victory for the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in the 2027 general elections, following a high-level political meeting with key stakeholders in Abuja.
Kwankwaso made the statement after hosting former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, at his residence on Wednesday. The meeting comes amid ongoing political realignments ahead of the next general election cycle and signals a strengthening of alliances within the ADC.
Atiku, a two-time presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), recently defected to the ADC, a move that has generated considerable reactions across Nigeria’s political landscape. His visit to Kwankwaso is widely seen as part of efforts to consolidate support within the party and build a formidable coalition.
The former vice president was accompanied by several prominent political figures, including Dino Melaye, as well as other influential leaders within the ADC. Their presence underscored the significance of the meeting and the growing momentum within the party.
In a statement shared after the meeting, Kwankwaso expressed his appreciation for the visit and described Atiku as a respected political ally. He highlighted the importance of unity and collaboration in achieving the party’s electoral goals.
“I was honoured to receive my dear brother, former Vice President, H.E. Atiku Abubakar, and his esteemed entourage at my residence in Abuja this afternoon,” Kwankwaso said.
He further revealed that the delegation included notable figures such as Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, Alhaji Kashim Imam, Dino Melaye, Alhaji Adamu Maina Waziri, and several other distinguished leaders.
Kwankwaso also used the opportunity to express gratitude to Atiku, who holds the traditional title of Wazirin Adamawa, for facilitating his integration into the ADC following recent political developments.
“I used the opportunity to personally thank the Wazirin Adamawa for his warm reception into the ADC and to reaffirm our unwavering commitment to delivering victory for the party at all levels,” he added.
The meeting is being interpreted by political analysts as a strategic step toward building a united front within the ADC, particularly as preparations for the 2027 elections begin to gather pace. With both Kwankwaso and Atiku commanding significant political influence and grassroots support, their collaboration is expected to play a crucial role in shaping the party’s prospects.
Kwankwaso, who previously led the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), remains a prominent figure in northern Nigerian politics. His alignment with Atiku and other political heavyweights within the ADC could potentially alter the dynamics of the country’s political landscape.
Observers note that the ongoing coalition-building efforts reflect a broader trend of political realignment, as key actors seek to reposition themselves ahead of the next general elections. The ADC, in particular, appears to be positioning itself as a viable alternative platform capable of challenging established parties.
While details of the discussions held during the meeting were not fully disclosed, sources indicate that issues relating to party structure, electoral strategy, and national development were part of the deliberations.
The development has sparked conversations among political stakeholders and the general public, with many closely watching how the emerging alliances will evolve in the coming months. Analysts believe that sustained unity among party leaders will be critical to translating political goodwill into electoral success.
As the 2027 general elections approach, the ADC is expected to intensify consultations and engagements aimed at strengthening its base across the country. The outcome of such efforts could significantly influence the balance of power in Nigeria’s political arena.
Kwankwaso’s renewed commitment, coupled with Atiku’s recent defection and active involvement, signals what may be the early stages of a broader political movement. Whether this alliance will ultimately deliver the desired electoral victory remains to be seen, but it has undoubtedly set the stage for an intriguing political contest in the years ahead.
