President of France, Emmanuel Macron, has strongly condemned deadly Israeli airstrikes on Lebanon, expressing full solidarity with Lebanese authorities and warning that the attacks could undermine the fragile regional ceasefire.
Macron made the remarks on Wednesday following separate phone calls with Lebanese President Joseph Aoun and Prime Minister Nawaf Salam, as tensions escalated sharply after a wave of coordinated strikes across the country.
In a statement posted on the social media platform X, Macron said he had conveyed France’s full support in the wake of what he described as indiscriminate attacks.
“I expressed France’s full solidarity in the face of the indiscriminate strikes carried out by Israel in Lebanon today, which resulted in a very high number of civilian casualties,” he said.
According to Lebanon’s Health Ministry, at least 112 people were killed and 837 others injured in the strikes, although officials noted that the figures remain preliminary and could rise as rescue efforts continue.
The Israeli military said it carried out strikes on more than 100 targets “within 10 minutes” across key areas including Beirut, the Beqaa Valley, and southern Lebanon. It described the operation as the largest coordinated wave of attacks since the beginning of the current offensive.
Macron condemned the strikes in the strongest terms, warning that the escalation poses a serious risk to ongoing diplomatic efforts aimed at stabilizing the region.
“We condemn these strikes in the strongest possible terms,” he said, adding that the attacks represent a “direct threat to the sustainability of the ceasefire that has just been reached.”
The ceasefire, agreed earlier between the United States and Iran, is intended to pave the way for broader negotiations to end the conflict that has left thousands dead and wounded. Macron stressed that Lebanon must be included within the scope of any such agreement.
“Lebanon must be fully covered by it,” he said, reinforcing calls from European leaders for the ceasefire framework to extend beyond Iran and include other affected areas.
The French president also reiterated his country’s commitment to supporting Lebanon’s sovereignty and stability. He emphasized France’s willingness to assist Lebanese authorities in strengthening state institutions and advancing efforts to disarm Hezbollah, in line with international agreements.
Macron’s intervention reflects growing concern among global leaders that continued military escalation in Lebanon could derail fragile diplomatic progress in the region. Analysts say the scale and intensity of the latest Israeli strikes have heightened fears of a broader conflict that could involve multiple fronts.
As international pressure mounts, France is positioning itself as a key voice advocating restraint, expanded ceasefire coverage, and renewed diplomatic engagement to prevent further deterioration of the situation.
With casualties rising and tensions remaining high, the coming days are expected to be critical in determining whether the ceasefire can hold and whether broader peace efforts can gain momentum across the region.
