The Nigeria Police Force has officially unsealed the national secretariat of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), located in Wuse Zone 5, restoring access to the party’s leadership and marking a significant step toward resolving months of internal crisis.
The development was confirmed in a statement issued by the PDP’s National Publicity Secretary, Jungudo Haruna Mohammed, who disclosed that the party’s Legacy House property in Maitama was also reopened and formally handed back to party officials.
Both properties had been sealed in November following a protracted leadership dispute within the opposition party. The crisis pitted a faction led by Tanimu Turaki against a caretaker committee reportedly backed by Nyesom Wike. The standoff created significant operational disruptions at the party’s national headquarters and raised concerns about the PDP’s internal cohesion ahead of key political activities.
The impasse, however, appears to have been resolved after the caretaker committee emerged as the recognised leadership at the party’s recent national convention. The outcome of the convention effectively settled the leadership question, paving the way for legal and administrative steps to restore normalcy within the party.
Following the convention, a ruling by the Federal High Court in Abuja directed the police to unseal the affected properties and return them to the control of the party’s duly recognised leadership. The police action to reopen the secretariat and Legacy House is therefore seen as compliance with the court’s directive.
According to the statement, the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) confirmed that both Wadata Plaza—its national secretariat—and Legacy House have now been fully reopened and handed over to key officials, including the National Chairman, Abdulrahman Mohammed Takushara, and the National Secretary, Samuel Anyanwu.
“The National Working Committee (NWC) of the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) hereby informs all members and the general public that the Party’s National Secretariat, Wadata Plaza, as well as The Legacy House, Maitama, have been unsealed by the Nigeria Police Force and handed over… in full compliance with duly issued court orders,” the statement read.
The PDP leadership commended the Nigeria Police Force for what it described as professionalism and strict adherence to the rule of law. Party officials noted that the police action reflects respect for constitutional order and due process, particularly in handling politically sensitive disputes.
Observers say the reopening of the secretariat is a critical step in restoring full administrative operations at the party’s national headquarters. For months, the sealing of the premises had limited access to key facilities, disrupted internal coordination, and complicated efforts to manage party affairs effectively.
In its statement, the party also issued a strong warning against any actions that could destabilize operations at the secretariat going forward. It cautioned members and supporters against engaging in activities that could lead to obstruction, disruption, or a breach of peace at party offices.
“The party strongly warns that it will not condone any act capable of causing obstruction, disruption, or breach of peace at the secretariat again,” the statement added, noting that security agencies have been placed on alert to respond to any violations.
The PDP further used the occasion to call for unity among its members, urging those who may still feel aggrieved by the outcome of the leadership tussle to put aside their differences in the interest of the party. The leadership emphasized that the resolution of the crisis provides an opportunity to rebuild cohesion and refocus on shared political objectives.
“This positive development reassures members that the recent challenges confronting the Party have been effectively resolved. We therefore call on all aggrieved members to sheathe their swords and embrace unity in the collective interest of the Party,” the statement said.
In addition, the party expressed appreciation to its leaders and stakeholders for their support throughout the period of internal crisis. Special mention was made of Nyesom Wike, described as a national leader of the party, whose role and backing were acknowledged as instrumental during the dispute.
The resolution of the PDP’s internal crisis and the reopening of its national secretariat come at a crucial time for Nigeria’s political landscape, as parties continue to reorganize and strategize ahead of future elections. Analysts suggest that the ability of the PDP to maintain unity and stability in the aftermath of the dispute will be key to its effectiveness as a major opposition force.
For now, the focus shifts to rebuilding trust within the party and ensuring that administrative activities resume without further disruption. With access to its headquarters restored, the Peoples Democratic Party is expected to intensify efforts to consolidate its leadership structure and re-engage its membership base across the country.
The reopening of Wadata Plaza and Legacy House thus marks not only the end of a contentious chapter in the party’s recent history but also the beginning of a new phase aimed at strengthening unity and advancing its political agenda.
