Hundreds of demonstrators on Wednesday took to the streets of KuGompo in South Africa, calling for the immediate closure of a nightclub allegedly linked to Nigerians. The establishment, known as California Tavern and located within the Belgrave Hotel, was accused by protesters of being involved in drug-related activities.
The march was organised by local residents and activists, with Nondumiso Tyiso, one of the organisers, claiming that illicit substances were being sold at the nightclub. Protesters intended to submit a memorandum to the building’s owner, demanding action against the nightclub’s operations.
The demonstration comes on the heels of earlier unrest last week, triggered by anti-immigrant group Operation Dudula protests following the reported “crowning” of a Nigerian “king” in Buffalo City. That earlier wave of protests reportedly involved the looting of several Somali-owned shops and the torching of vehicles, heightening tensions across the region.
On Wednesday, many immigrant-owned businesses in KuGompo city centre closed their doors amid fears of possible attacks. Police maintained a heavy presence throughout the protest, aiming to prevent violence and property damage. A confrontation occurred when protesters attempted to enter the Belgrave Hotel, where the nightclub is located, but officers blocked their entry.
Hazel Mqala, spokesperson for the KuGompo city police, emphasised that officers were deployed to maintain order. “We have a responsibility to protect everyone,” she said, noting that drugs had previously been confiscated during routine patrols in the area.
Later on Wednesday, Brigadier Nobuntu Gantana of the South African Police Service stated that security forces had dispersed some individuals involved in criminal activities using stun grenades and rubber bullets. She confirmed that one suspect was arrested for assaulting a police officer and is expected to appear in court.
Gantana also provided an update on ongoing investigations related to last week’s protests, saying authorities had opened 11 criminal cases and arrested two individuals connected with the unrest.
Amid rising tensions and safety concerns, the owners of the Belgrave Hotel announced that they had decided to close down California Tavern, citing the recent protests and allegations as part of their decision.
The events in KuGompo reflect growing concerns over crime and drug-related activities associated with certain establishments, as well as broader socio-political tensions involving immigrant communities. Authorities have assured residents and business owners that policing measures will remain in place to prevent further incidents and maintain public order.
