As the 2027 general elections approach, Senator Ede Dafinone has called on Urhobo youths to engage in politics with decorum and respect, stressing the importance of civility and unity within the community.
In a statement released during the Easter period—a season he described as one of reflection and renewal—Dafinone expressed concern over the growing trend of personal attacks and incendiary remarks by young people on social media and other public platforms. “Some of our youths, in their zeal to support preferred candidates, have unfortunately resorted to personal attacks against leaders and fellow citizens. This is not who we are as a people,” he said, highlighting the Urhobo nation’s longstanding cultural values of respect and mutual regard.
The senator urged young political enthusiasts to support their candidates passionately but responsibly, emphasizing that critiques of opposing views should always be conducted with civility. “We must not allow political differences to tear us apart or destroy the bonds and bridges we have painstakingly built over the years,” he said, noting that beyond politics, the community remains united by a shared heritage and destiny.
Dafinone also underscored that civility is a mark of strength and character, reflecting discipline, good upbringing, and refinement. Drawing on his own political experience, he noted that despite facing provocations and unwarranted attacks, he has consistently chosen not to respond in kind. “We must rise above hostility and embody the principles we wish to see in our society,” he said.
The senator reminded youths that today’s opponents in politics could become tomorrow’s allies, warning against actions that could bring disrepute to the collective identity of the Urhobo people. “There are no permanent enemies, only shared interests in the progress of our people,” he said.
In closing, Dafinone urged Urhobo youths to lead by example, advocating for responsible engagement, respectful dialogue, and integrity in political discourse. He concluded by extending Easter greetings to the community, wishing for a peaceful and blessed celebration.
The message reflects growing calls for political maturity ahead of the 2027 elections, particularly in regions where social media has become a primary platform for youth engagement and political expression. By promoting civility and unity, leaders like Dafinone aim to preserve both cultural identity and the cohesion of the Urhobo nation during periods of intense political activity.
