US-Israeli Airstrikes Target PMF Positions in Iraq’s Anbar as Regional Tensions Escalate

Iraq’s Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF) announced on Tuesday that more than seven airstrikes allegedly carried out by the United States and Israel targeted its positions in Anbar province, resulting in material damage but no reported casualties.

According to a statement released by the PMF and carried by the Iraqi News Agency, the strikes focused on locations belonging to the PMF’s Anbar Operations Command as well as the 13th Al-Tufuf Brigade. The development comes amid rising tensions across the Middle East following ongoing hostilities involving Iran, Israel, and the United States.

The PMF said the airstrikes hit key operational infrastructure, including communications sections, military vehicles, and several transport units. While the group confirmed that equipment and facilities sustained damage, it noted that no personnel were killed or injured during the strikes.

The statement described the attacks as part of a broader escalation in the region, warning that continued military operations could further destabilize Iraq and surrounding countries already facing heightened security challenges.

Local sources in Anbar province reported that explosions were heard in multiple areas, with residents witnessing aircraft activity prior to the strikes. Security forces were later deployed to assess the extent of the damage and secure the affected locations.

Anbar province, located in western Iraq, has long held strategic importance due to its proximity to Syria and its history as a key operational zone during counterterrorism campaigns against extremist groups. The presence of various security formations, including the Popular Mobilization Forces, has made the region sensitive to military developments.

The Popular Mobilization Forces, also known as PMF, is a coalition of armed groups officially integrated into Iraq’s security apparatus. The group was formed in 2014 to combat extremist threats and has since played a major role in Iraq’s internal security operations. However, the PMF’s relationships with regional actors have occasionally placed it at the center of geopolitical tensions.

The reported airstrikes come as regional escalations continue to intensify following a major offensive launched by Israel and the United States against Iran on February 28. According to available reports, the offensive resulted in significant casualties, with more than 1,340 people reportedly killed since the start of the conflict.

Among those reportedly killed during the escalation was Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, an event that significantly heightened tensions across the region and prompted swift retaliatory responses from Tehran.

In response to the attacks, Iran has reportedly launched multiple drone and missile strikes targeting Israel as well as locations in Jordan, Iraq, and several Gulf countries hosting United States military assets. These retaliatory operations have reportedly caused casualties, damaged infrastructure, and heightened fears of a broader regional conflict.

The escalating hostilities have also had global implications, affecting financial markets, energy supplies, and aviation routes. Airlines have rerouted flights away from affected airspace, while energy markets have experienced volatility due to concerns about supply disruptions.

Regional governments have expressed concern over the growing instability, urging restraint and diplomatic engagement to prevent further escalation. Analysts warn that continued exchanges of strikes between the parties could draw additional countries into the conflict, further complicating the already fragile security environment.

Security experts note that Iraq remains particularly vulnerable to spillover effects due to the presence of multiple armed groups and foreign military interests within its territory. Any increase in hostilities involving these actors risks destabilizing the country and undermining ongoing efforts to maintain security.

Meanwhile, Iraqi authorities have not yet released an official statement confirming or denying the involvement of US or Israeli forces in the reported strikes. However, officials are said to be monitoring the situation closely as investigations continue.

Residents in Anbar province expressed concern about the potential consequences of the strikes, noting that renewed military activity could affect civilian safety and disrupt daily life. Some local leaders called for measures to prevent further escalation and ensure the protection of communities in the affected areas.

The latest development underscores the growing complexity of the regional security landscape, as tensions between Iran, Israel, and the United States continue to influence events across the Middle East.

Observers say the situation remains fluid, with the possibility of further military actions depending on developments in the coming days. Diplomatic efforts aimed at de-escalation are expected to intensify as international stakeholders seek to prevent a broader conflict.

The Popular Mobilization Forces concluded its statement by reaffirming its readiness to respond to any future threats while urging caution to avoid actions that could further inflame tensions in Iraq and the wider region.

As the crisis continues to unfold, attention remains focused on whether diplomatic channels can reduce tensions or whether the region will witness further military confrontations in the days ahead.
