Former Senate President David Mark Rallies African Democratic Congress Leadership for 2027 Campaign Amid Mounting National Hardship

The race for the 2027 general elections took a significant step forward on Saturday in Abuja as the African Democratic Congress convened a high-stakes meeting of its National Executive Committee. Addressing a diverse gathering of party leaders, state delegates, and key stakeholders, the National Chairman of the party, David Mark, delivered an extensive and wide-ranging assessment of the current state of the nation. The former Senate President used the high-profile platform to declare that a vast majority of the Nigerian electorate is now actively searching for a credible, stable, and patriotic alternative to the current ruling political class, placing an immense historical burden on his political organization to step into the gap and rescue the country from its ongoing difficulties.

During his comprehensive address to the party hierarchy, the veteran lawmaker emphasized that the current political climate presents both a profound responsibility and a unique opportunity for alternative political movements. Mark warned the assembled party leaders that they cannot afford to disappoint the millions of citizens who are gradually turning away from traditional power structures in search of genuine governance. He stated that the African Democratic Congress must intentionally position itself as a highly viable, structurally sound, and ideologically disciplined platform that is fully capable of addressing the complex security deficits and deep economic challenges currently destabilizing the West African nation.

Reviewing the contemporary security situation across the federation, the National Chairman expressed deep administrative and personal concern over the unchecked proliferation of insecurity, which continues to endanger lives, disrupt local livelihoods, and paralyze critical economic activities in almost every geopolitical zone. He noted that Nigeria today faces profound, multifaceted structural challenges that strike at the very heart of its national sovereignty. He observed that various communities are being displaced on a daily basis, rural farmers are increasingly unable to cultivate their lands without facing mortal danger, urban businesses are continually struggling under exceptionally hostile economic conditions, and millions of ordinary families are waking up each day to severe hardship, profound vulnerability, and systemic uncertainty.

In addition to the pervasive security crisis, Mark provided a detailed critique of the country's worsening macroeconomic indicators. He specifically highlighted the rapidly rising cost of basic living necessities, soaring unemployment rates among the youth demographic, a sharp decline in consumer purchasing power, and the resulting widespread social discontent as urgent national crises that require immediate, sincere, and holistic attention from those currently entrusted with the instruments of state governance. He pointed out that the growing financial burden on the average Nigerian household has reached an unsustainable threshold, creating an environment of deep anxiety and frustration across the country.

Despite his sharp assessment of the ruling administration's shortcomings, the National Chairman took a distinctly statesmanlike approach regarding how an opposition party should engage with national crises. He explicitly stressed that the African Democratic Congress would never seek to cheapen or exploit the profound suffering of the Nigerian people for mere partisan advantage or cynical political gain. He clarified that as a highly responsible, patriotic opposition movement, his party does not celebrate the institutional difficulties confronting the nation, nor do they find comfort in the pain of the citizens. Instead, he affirmed that the party stands firmly in support of every genuine, transparent effort aimed at restoring absolute peace, securing communities, stabilizing the national economy, and reinforcing national cohesion across regional and religious divides.

To this end, the former Senate President issued a direct call to action to all tiers of government, including federal, state, and local administrations, urging them to significantly intensify their current operational efforts to combat banditry, terrorism, and economic sabotage while prioritizing the material welfare of the populace. Turning his focus inward toward the internal dynamics of his own organization, Mark emphasized that absolute internal unity, organizational cohesion, and strict party discipline will be the critical decisive factors that determine their success or failure on the 2027 presidential and legislative ballots.

He argued that the true strength of an alternative political movement lies not in internal fractionalization or public divisions, but in a unified collective resolve. He strongly cautioned party members against the dangers of unbridled personal ambition, stating that individual aspirations must always remain subordinate to the collective interests and institutional health of the party. He advised that internal disagreements and friction, which are natural occurrences within any expansive democratic setting, must always be resolved through mature dialogue, mutual respect, and the utilization of established internal party conflict-resolution mechanisms.

The National Chairman also directly addressed the recent internal friction that emerged from the party's primary elections conducted across various states and federal constituencies. Acknowledging that the national leadership had received numerous complaints, petitions, and expressions of concern from aggrieved aspirants, Mark sought to reassure the general membership that these grievances would be treated with the utmost fairness and transparency. He maintained that such disputes are neither unusual in competitive democratic contests nor beyond amicable resolution within the legal framework provided by the party’s constitution and established guidelines.

He informed the National Executive Committee that the National Working Committee is already moving swiftly to review the comprehensive recommendations submitted by various internal appeal committees before making final, binding determinations on disputed tickets. He clarified that their ultimate objective remains entirely clear, explaining that the party must present an untainted, highly competitive slate of candidates who are not only deeply committed to the foundational ideals of the political movement but who also possess the proven professional capacity, public credibility, and grassroots electoral strength necessary to win elections and effectively serve the populace.

In concluding his extensive address, Mark urged party loyalists and organizers nationwide to return to their respective local government areas and wards to aggressively strengthen the party's grassroots structures. He emphasized that the building of a formidable national political machine relies entirely on deep community engagement, robust local organizing, and a sustained public commitment to creating a superior governance model. He charged the executive members to remain focused on the long-term vision of providing a stable, structured political home for all Nigerians ahead of the 2027 polls.

It is good to be involved in the politics so that inferior people with inferior ideas don't take over the government in decision making and policies.
