Ofoni Leads Major Decongestion Drive at Effurun Roundabout and PTI Junction

Effurun — In a decisive move to restore sanity and aesthetic appeal to one of Delta State’s busiest transport hubs, the Chairman of Uvwie Local Government Council, Hon. Chief Anthony Onoriode Ofoni JP, led a high-powered enforcement team on Monday to clear illegal motor parks and trading spots from the Effurun Roundabout and PTI Junction axis. The operation, which involved the evacuation of commercial vehicles from the government's right of way, is part of a broader strategy to complement the massive infrastructural projects currently being executed by the Governor Sheriff Oborevwori-led administration.

The exercise comes at a time when the Effurun Roundabout is undergoing a significant face-lift, with construction giant Julius Berger handling a multi-billion naira flyover and road expansion project. During a preliminary inspection, Chairman Ofoni observed that the encroachment of commercial vehicles and makeshift parks into the construction zones was not only causing severe traffic gridlock but was also actively obstructing the pace of work and jeopardizing the safety of both workers and commuters.

Accompanied by the state task force and other relevant law enforcement authorities, Chief Ofoni supervised the prompt removal of vehicles that had turned the edges of the construction site into unauthorized loading zones. The Chairman noted that the disorderliness in the area was devaluing the aesthetic and functional benefits of the ongoing "MORE Agenda" projects, which are designed to transform Uvwie into a modern urban center.

Speaking during the enforcement exercise, Chief Ofoni explicated the rationale behind the sudden shake-up. He emphasized that his administration is fully committed to the governor's drive for meaningful development across Delta State. According to the Chairman, the world-class roads and bridges being constructed in the council area represent a huge investment of public funds that must be protected through disciplined usage and strict adherence to traffic regulations.

"We cannot allow the beauty and utility of these new infrastructures to be devalued by an approach to their use that favors chaos over order," Ofoni stated. "This decongestion is in line with the state government's vision to reveal the true beauty of our environment while ensuring that development is felt by every resident through a free flow of traffic and a safer commuting experience."

Recognizing the economic impact of the evacuation on the livelihoods of transport workers, the Uvwie council boss was quick to provide a silver lining. He announced that the local government had already made provisions for a suitable alternative location to serve as a designated motor park for the affected drivers. Chief Ofoni assured the commercial motorists that the exercise was not intended to "take food off their tables" or suppress their businesses, but rather to promote an orderly environment that safeguards the lives of pedestrians and commuters alike.

The intervention received an unexpectedly warm reception from some members of the transport sector. A commercial bus driver operating in the axis praised the efforts of the Chairman and his team, admitting that the previous state of affairs was unsustainable and dangerous. The driver noted that the intervention would restore normalcy to their working environment and reduce the frequent altercations between drivers and construction workers. He expressed the readiness of his colleagues to comply with the new arrangements and relocate to the designated parks provided by the council.

In addition to the removal of commercial vehicles, the enforcement team also turned its attention to the informal markets that had sprouted along the right of way. Traders were directed to remove their wares from the roadside to prevent the narrowing of the carriage way. The directive reportedly met with absolute compliance, as many traders acknowledged the necessity of the decongestion for the overall free flow of traffic in the PTI Junction area.

Chairman Ofoni further used the occasion to reaffirm his administration's unalloyed commitment to the development of Uvwie Local Government Area. He showcased his readiness to continue collaborating with the state government, noting that the synergy between the local council and the state executive has brought unprecedented progress to the area. He issued a stern marching order to the task force to maintain a permanent presence in the area to forestall a repeat of the encroachment, warning that any motorist or trader who attempts to return to the right of way will face severe legal consequences.

The Uvwie council boss requested "unrepentant compliance" from all stakeholders, urging residents to see themselves as partners in progress. As the construction work at the Effurun Roundabout enters a critical phase, the local government’s proactive stance is expected to significantly reduce the project's lead time by removing man-made obstructions and allowing the construction machinery to operate at full capacity.

As the dust settles on the day's exercise, the Effurun Roundabout and PTI Junction now present a much clearer and more organized view, a transformation that residents hope will be sustained long after the construction projects are completed. The local government has promised to continue its monitoring of the axis to ensure that Uvwie remains a shining example of urban orderliness in Delta State.
