ABUJA, NIGERIA — In a major move aimed at injecting youth, innovation, and technological expertise into the nation's tertiary education administration, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the appointment of Professor Segun Aina as the new Registrar and Chief Executive Officer of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB).
The announcement marks a significant generational shift in the leadership of one of Nigeria’s most critical public institutions, which oversees the annual administration of the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) for millions of Nigerian youth.
The historic development was made public on Thursday, May 21, 2026, via an official press release issued by Bayo Onanuga, the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy. According to the State House communication, Aina, an accomplished academic who will turn 40 in July, is slated to officially take over the leadership mantle from the long-serving incumbent Registrar, Professor Ishaq Oloyede. Oloyede’s highly impactful and transformative two-term tenure at the helm of the board is scheduled to formally conclude on July 31, 2026.
A Profile in Academic and Technological Excellence
In the statement, Onanuga described Professor Aina as a highly distinguished academic, institutional reformer, and systems expert with extensive, deep-rooted experience in national examination structures, digital architecture, and public-sector optimization. The incoming Registrar possesses an elite educational pedigree built across top-tier global and domestic institutions, positioning him uniquely to steer the board into a highly technological future.
Aina began his higher education journey in the United Kingdom, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Engineering (B.Eng.) in Computer Systems Engineering from the University of Kent. Demonstrating an early aptitude for advanced digital computing, he proceeded to Loughborough University, also in the United Kingdom, where he successfully obtained a Master of Science (M.Sc.) degree in Internet Computing and Network Security.
Driven by a quest for deeper academic and technical proficiency, Aina remained at Loughborough University to pursue his doctoral studies, ultimately earning a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Digital Signal Processing. Beyond his core engineering and technological qualifications, the incoming JAMB boss is also an alumnus of the prestigious Senior Management Programme (SMP) at the Lagos Business School (LBS), a credential that equips him with contemporary corporate governance, strategic planning, and administrative leadership skills.
From National Youth Service to the Peak of Academia
Until his historic appointment by the President, Aina has been serving as a Professor of Computer Engineering at the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, where he has mentored a new generation of engineers and tech innovators. Interestingly, his professional relationship with the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board is not entirely new; rather, it represents a homecoming of sorts.
Professor Aina’s foundational connection with JAMB dates back to his mandatory National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) year. During his service year, he was deployed to the board, where he gained vital, early hands-on exposure to national admissions processes, data-driven operations, and large-scale examination logistics.
State House officials noted that this formative experience gave him an early, insider perspective on the operational challenges and opportunities within the board. Over the subsequent decades, this early exposure continued to inform his academic research, consulting work, and advocacy centered around national examination reform, systems optimization, and data security.
To complement his academic achievements, Professor Aina maintains active, high-level affiliations with several prestigious professional bodies in Nigeria and abroad. He is a fully registered member of the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN), a fellow and member of the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE), the global Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), and the international Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET).
Consolidating on the Oloyede Legacy
The transition comes at a time when JAMB is widely regarded as one of the most transparent, high-performing, and revenue-generating agencies of the federal government, largely due to the rigorous reforms introduced by the outgoing Registrar, Professor Ishaq Oloyede. Oloyede’s ten-year stewardship completely overhauled the UTME process, introduced stringent anti-cheating technologies, eliminated institutional waste, and resulted in the unprecedented remittance of billions of naira to the federal government's coffers.
Acknowledging this formidable legacy, Onanuga stated that President Tinubu holds immensely high expectations for the incoming chief executive. The President expects Professor Aina to leverage his deep, specialized expertise in network security, digital signals, and computer systems engineering to consolidate the immense achievements recorded under Oloyede’s leadership.
Furthermore, the presidency intends for the new Registrar to introduce next-generation technologies that will completely bulletproof the board's examinations against digital malpractice, simplify the university placement process, and boost the institution to even greater operational heights. As the educational sector prepares for this massive leadership transition on July 31, stakeholders across the country are expressing optimism that Aina’s youthful drive and profound technical background will usher in a golden era of digital efficiency for Nigerian tertiary admissions.
