Imo 2027: Samuel Anyanwu Declares Gubernatorial Ambition, Calls for Equity Among Imo’s Historical Political Bloc

OWERRI — The political climate in Imo State has experienced a significant surge in momentum ahead of next year's highly anticipated gubernatorial election, following an assertive declaration by Senator Samuel Anyanwu, the National Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party. Speaking to a massive crowd of party loyalists, grassroots organizers, and political strategists in Owerri, the state capital, the prominent politician, popularly known by his political moniker "Sam Daddy," formally staked his claim to the state’s highest executive office, asserting that the principles of equity, justice, and political fairness dictate that it is now undeniably his turn to govern the state.

The high-profile declaration transpired during the official inauguration and launch of a specialized grassroots mobilization network designated as the 'Polling Unit Movement for Sam Daddy.' The newly formed group is structurally designed to penetrate the foundational layers of the state's electorate, organizing voters at the individual polling unit level to build an unbreakable wall of support for the PDP ahead of the upcoming electoral contest. The event served as a major rallying point for the opposition, signaling the formal commencement of a coordinated campaign to reclaim the Douglas House governorship seat.

Delivering his address to the enthusiastic gathering, Anyanwu anchored his gubernatorial bid on a historical analysis of the state's contemporary leadership trajectory. He reminded the audience that the dominant political figures who have controlled the executive governance of Imo State over the last two decades all emerged from what he described as the "old PDP" establishment in Imo. He specifically pointed to three of his contemporaries—former Governor Chief Ikedi Ohakim, former Governor Rt. Hon. Emeka Ihedioha, and the current incumbent Governor, Senator Hope Uzodimma—as individuals who shared the same political foundational roots with him before various alignments reshaped the state's partisan landscape.

According to Anyanwu, this historical reality creates a compelling moral argument for his candidacy. He explained that within that tight-knit circle of four powerful, foundational PDP leaders who defined the modern political era of the state, he remains the only individual who has not yet occupied the governor's seat. He noted that while divine providence and political shifting had allowed Ohakim, Ihedioha, and Uzodimma to take turns steering the administrative affairs of the state, he had remained steadfast and consistent, waiting for the appropriate historical moment to present his vision to the people.

“We were four strong, foundational PDP members who held the reins of political influence in this state: myself, Hope Uzodimma, Ikedi Ohakim, and Emeka Ihedioha,” Anyanwu declared to the applauding delegates. “As God may have it in His infinite wisdom, all three of them have had their opportunities to rule over Imo State, while I have remained true to my path. I have now come forward to take my rightful turn, and I believe that in the spirit of fairness and mutual respect, the other contestants will recognize this alignment and make space for me.”

Despite his appeal for generational fairness, the PDP National Secretary demonstrated a clear, pragmatic understanding of the unforgiving nature of Nigerian electoral politics. He acknowledged that executive power is rarely handed over on a silver platter or granted simply out of sentimental considerations of equity. Anyanwu emphasized that he is fully prepared for the intense competitive friction that defines the state's political arena, vowing to remain completely undeterred by rival factions or competing interests.

“It is an established truth in our political lexicon that power is never given freely; it is fought for and it is taken through rigorous organization and collective will. I am completely aware of the magnitude of this struggle, and I assure you that I will stay entirely focused on the ball, refusing to be distracted by side issues,” he told the crowd.

Expressing immense confidence regarding the structural health and future prospects of the Peoples Democratic Party in the state, Anyanwu dismissed claims that the party had been permanently weakened by recent internal fractures or high-profile defections. Instead, he painted a picture of a revitalized, aggressively expanding organization that is rapidly gaining ground across all three senatorial districts of the state. He asserted that the PDP remains the only political brand that enjoys the authentic, deep-seated trust of the ordinary people of the state, promising that the party would not betray the mandate of the populace when given the opportunity to govern again.

Turning his attention to the operational mechanics of the upcoming election, the gubernatorial hopeful issued a stern, uncompromising warning to political adversaries who might be plotting to undermine the democratic process through unfair practices, ballot manipulation, or technological subversion. Anyanwu assured his supporters that the PDP has developed a highly sophisticated, multi-layered counter-strategy to neutralize any irregular electoral tactics. He revealed that the party has already begun strategically positioning vigilant, well-trained workers and monitors around every single polling station across the state to watch over the voting process, protect the physical integrity of the ballot boxes, and defend the results on the ground until they are officially and legally declared.

Anyanwu concluded by charging the members of the newly minted Polling Unit Movement to work in absolute synergy with pre-existing pro-Anyanwu structures, including the parent 'Divine Mandate' organization and the wide-reaching 'Mass Movement for Sam Daddy.' He urged the coordinators to take the message of renewal directly into the rural communities, ensuring that every citizen is actively mobilized to participate in what he termed the "new song" of liberation and developmental progress for the state.
