Oyo State Government Pleads With Teachers Union To Suspend Strike And Reopen Classrooms Following Brutal School Abductions In Oriire Local Government Area

The Oyo State Government has issued an impassioned, high-level appeal to the leadership and members of the Nigerian Union of Teachers, urging them to immediately suspend their ongoing indefinite strike action and allow public schools across the state to resume normal academic activities. The urgent state intervention follows a massive, highly disruptive shutdown of the public education sector, which was triggered after teachers collectively withdrew their services from classrooms to protest the horrific mass abduction of students and educators within Oriire Local Government Area.

Speaking to journalists at the Governor’s Office in Ibadan directly following a lengthy State Executive Council meeting, the Oyo State Commissioner for Information, Dotun Oyelade, stated that the state administration deeply understands, respects, and validates the profound safety concerns raised by the teaching community regarding the recent waves of rural insecurity. He, however, pleaded with the leadership of the teachers' union to critically evaluate the broader, long-term impact of the prolonged industrial action on the academic progress of the students, the emotional well-being of anxious parents, and the structural integrity of the state’s foundational education system.

According to Oyelade, the continued complete closure of public primary and secondary schools is severely fracturing the standardized academic calendar, causing students to fall behind their peers nationally, and creating immense social and economic pressure on families across the various administrative zones of the state. The commissioner explicitly reiterated that the Governor Seyi Makinde-led administration remains unreservedly committed to resolving the ongoing security crisis. He assured residents and stakeholders that joint security forces, including the police, military, and local Western Nigeria Security Network, popularly known as Amotekun, are working around the clock to bring the traumatizing kidnapping incident in Oriire to a swift and safe conclusion.

The total industrial action embarked upon by the teachers’ union was a direct response to the tragic May 15 coordinated attacks on vulnerable educational institutions located within Oriire Local Government Area. During the highly organized invasions, armed bandits simultaneously targetted Baptist Nursery and Primary School in Yawota, Community Grammar School in Esiele, and L.A. Primary School, also located within the Esiele community. More than 40 innocent pupils and their instructors were forcefully abducted and marched into nearby forests during the violent raid, an incident that sent shockwaves through the entirety of Oyo State and reignited intense national panic regarding the vulnerability of rural school infrastructure.

The tragic school invasions also resulted in immediate bloodshed and loss of life, deeply traumatizing the local communities. One of the primary victims of the initial assault, a dedicated classroom teacher identified as Joel Adesiyan, was brutally killed on-site by the gunmen during the chaotic invasion of the school premises. The tragedy deepened significantly weeks later when a second victim, an acclaimed Mathematics teacher named Michael Oyedokun, was executed by his abductors while being held in captivity. The news of Oyedokun's murder further intensified public outrage, triggering a wave of intense fear and panic among educators, parents, and community leaders across the state, which ultimately forced the union to take drastic labor action.

In the wake of these killings, the Nigerian Union of Teachers has maintained a firm, uncompromising stance, insisting that its members will absolutely not return to their classrooms until the Oyo State Government implements visible, highly robust security measures to guarantee the physical safety of both school staff and students. The union has repeatedly argued that its decision is driven by a moral and professional obligation to protect the lives of teachers working in highly vulnerable, isolated border communities, emphasizing that they cannot in good conscience send their members back to work while several victims remain in the custody of heavily armed bandits.

In an apparent bid to demonstrate its long-term commitment to the educational sector amidst the unfolding security and labor crisis, the Oyo State Government concurrently announced a massive new financial investment aimed at improving infrastructure and learning conditions within public schools. Commissioner Oyelade disclosed that the State Executive Council had officially approved the immediate release of N8.76 billion as the first operational tranche for the massive procurement of high-quality teaching and learning materials for primary and junior secondary schools across the state. This substantial funding injection forms part of a much larger, comprehensive education intervention project valued at over N23 billion.

According to the information commissioner, the state-wide procurement will focus heavily on distributing textbooks in foundational core subjects, including Mathematics, English Language, Literacy, Numeracy, and Basic Science. He explained that this major structural intervention is being carried out via a strategic partnership connecting the state government with the federal Universal Basic Education Commission and the World Bank to dramatically strengthen learning outcomes in the region. Oyelade added that a transparent and successful implementation of this specific phase would automatically qualify Oyo State for additional reward-based financing under the international development programme’s strict financing arrangement.

Furthermore, the council approved several critical structural adjustments to the ongoing 2026 state budget to effectively accommodate increased funding requests submitted by various ministries, departments, and agencies. According to the government, this comprehensive budget realignment is aimed at ensuring the seamless, well-funded completion of major ongoing infrastructural projects across the state before the current administration reaches its constitutional conclusion in 2027.

The state government's latest plea to the teachers arrives amid intense, compounding public pressure on regional authorities to restore foundational confidence in the public school system and decisively crush the emerging security threats facing vulnerable youths. Parents, traditional rulers, and educational stakeholders have continued to issue urgent calls for immediate tactical deployments, demanding the permanent positioning of armed security personnel at rural school facilities to prevent further devastating attacks on the future leaders of the state.
