The Senior Policy Adviser on Labour Relations and SERVICOM to the Delta State Government, Rt. Hon. Funkekeme Solomon, has described Dennis Osadebay University as one of the fastest-growing universities in Nigeria, attributing its rapid progress to the unwavering support of Governor Sheriff Oborevwori and his administration's commitment to building the institution into a centre of academic excellence.
Solomon made the remarks during an interactive session on the Service Compact with All Nigerians (SERVICOM) held at the university as part of the state government's renewed drive to strengthen service delivery across public institutions.
He said the reintroduction of SERVICOM by Governor Oborevwori underscores the administration's commitment to efficiency, accountability and quality service in the public sector.
According to him, while the governor has continued to provide a conducive learning environment through improved infrastructure and funding, the university community must complement these efforts by promoting discipline, decent dressing and proper conduct among students.
He commended the management of the institution for the progress recorded since its establishment and urged them to sustain the high standards they have set as a lasting legacy for future generations.
The former Deputy Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly also expressed concern over the abuse of concessions granted to public servants for school runs.
He noted that while the policy was introduced to enable parents pick up their children from school, some workers exploit the privilege by failing to return to work afterwards, while others falsely claim the concession despite no longer having children of school age.
"SERVICOM is all about quality service delivery. It must be timely, fair and acceptable," Solomon said, urging the university management to continue prioritising excellence in service delivery as a critical component of good governance and institutional development.
He assured the university that Governor Oborevwori would sustain support for the institution, particularly through improved funding for infrastructure development in the Faculty of Science and other academic units.
Earlier, the Vice-Chancellor of Dennis Osadebay University, Samuel Ovuete Aghalino, who was represented by Patrick Ajieh, said although the institution is still relatively young, it is determined to compete favourably with world-class universities if provided with the necessary support.
He pledged the university's commitment to fostering a productive partnership with the Delta State Government to advance the implementation of Governor Oborevwori's MORE Agenda through quality education, innovation and excellent service delivery.
