The action comes as environmental authorities prepare for a predicted surge of high-pathogenicity H5 avian influenza (bird flu) cases among local wildlife populations during the upcoming breeding season.
Officials from the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water confirmed that the Australian Antarctic Division reached a "difficult decision" to pull personnel from the isolated outpost. While H5 bird flu has not yet been officially detected on Macquarie Island itself, the decision was driven primarily by severe psychosocial risks to team members who could witness catastrophic mass mortality events among neighboring animal colonies.
The remote scientific station, established in 1948 in the Southern Ocean approximately 1,500 kilometers (932 miles) southeast of Tasmania, currently houses 24 expeditioners living and working on site. The island serves as a vital ecological hub and breeding ground, supporting millions of seabirds, multiple penguin species, and an estimated population of over 80,000 southern elephant seals.
Station infrastructure sits in close proximity to major breeding grounds, raising serious operational and psychological concerns. Government assessments predict an exceptionally high probability of widespread virus transmission among species on the island over the coming months.
Experience from other sub-Antarctic zones shows that marine mammals in the region face severe outcomes from exposure to the pathogen. According to the department, southern elephant seals have demonstrated extreme susceptibility to the H5 strain, with pup mortality rates exceeding 90 percent in affected colonies located across the external territories of Heard Island and the McDonald Islands.
Australia's icebreaking research vessel, the RSV Nuyina, is scheduled to sail to Macquarie Island in early October to extract the 24 personnel alongside critical equipment. Environmental authorities noted that proactive extraction is necessary, as emergency evacuations from the remote location during an active crisis could face delays of several months due to harsh weather and geographical isolation. Active control measures for native wildlife are not planned due to the island's extreme environment.
The announcement coincides with reports of the virus expanding across Australian coastal ecosystems. Separately, South Australian health officials confirmed that a dead common dolphin retrieved at Goolwa on the Fleurieu Peninsula tested positive for H5N1 bird flu. Dr. Skye Fruean, Chief Veterinary Officer for South Australia, highlighted the growing vulnerability of marine mammals, stating that species like dolphins are highly susceptible to the pathogen and face severe ongoing infection risks.
Government statistics indicate a total of 354 confirmed H5 bird flu events in wildlife across Australia, with South Australia bearing the largest impact at 203 recorded cases. Additional positive cases in the region have been confirmed in red foxes, brown falcons, and ravens, pointing to a widening spillover across species lines. Environmental managers plan to review safety conditions on Macquarie Island in future seasons, maintaining long-term commitments to resume scientific activities once risks stabilize.
