Former Kosovo President Hashim Thaci has been found guilty of war crimes and sentenced to 25 years in prison by a Kosovo war crimes tribunal in The Hague.
Thaci, 58, was convicted in connection with crimes committed during the Kosovo conflict in the 1990s, when he served as a senior commander of the Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA), an ethnic Albanian armed group that fought against Serbian forces during Kosovo's struggle to break away from Serbia.
The tribunal found Thaci responsible for crimes including murder, torture and illegal detention, according to the ruling issued on Wednesday. The case has focused on allegations arising from the conduct of the KLA during the conflict and the treatment of people held by its forces.
Thaci's conviction marks a significant development in the long-running legal proceedings concerning senior figures from the former KLA. The proceedings have examined allegations of serious violations committed during and after the armed conflict in Kosovo.
Prosecutors at the tribunal had sought a substantially longer sentence. They requested a maximum 45-year prison term for Thaci and the other defendants in the case, including former senior KLA figures Kadri Veseli, Rexhep Selimi and Jakup Krasniqi.
The prosecution's request covered the defendants in connection with allegations of war crimes and crimes against humanity arising from the Kosovo conflict.
Thaci and the other defendants had consistently pleaded not guilty to the charges against them. Their defence teams rejected the allegations, setting the stage for a lengthy trial in which prosecutors presented evidence concerning events during the conflict and the defendants' alleged roles.
The proceedings have attracted considerable attention because of Thaci's prominent political career following the Kosovo war. After the conflict, he became one of Kosovo's leading political figures and eventually served as the country's president.
Before becoming president, Thaci was an important figure in Kosovo's post-war political development. His transition from KLA commander to senior political leader placed him at the centre of Kosovo's efforts to establish its political institutions and strengthen its international standing.
The war in Kosovo took place in the late 1990s as ethnic Albanian forces sought independence from Serbian rule. The conflict resulted in widespread displacement and significant loss of life before international intervention and the eventual withdrawal of Serbian forces from Kosovo.
The tribunal proceedings have sought to establish individual responsibility for alleged crimes committed during that period. The case against Thaci and the other former KLA leaders has been closely followed both in Kosovo and internationally because of the defendants' positions during the conflict and their subsequent roles in public life.
The 25-year sentence handed down to Thaci represents the tribunal's determination following its examination of the evidence presented during the proceedings. The ruling also adds another major chapter to the legal efforts to address alleged crimes associated with the Kosovo conflict.
For supporters of Thaci and other former KLA figures, the proceedings have been viewed through the broader history of Kosovo's struggle against Serbian forces and the political transformation that followed the war. For prosecutors and victims involved in the proceedings, the case has focused on accountability for alleged crimes committed against individuals during the conflict.
The verdict and sentence are therefore significant not only because of Thaci's former position as Kosovo's president, but also because they concern allegations arising from one of the most consequential conflicts in the Balkans in the late 20th century.
The tribunal's decision places the former president's wartime activities under formal judicial judgment decades after the events in question. The proceedings involving the other defendants remain part of the broader legal process surrounding allegations against former KLA leaders.
The case underscores the continuing international effort to investigate and prosecute serious crimes allegedly committed during the Kosovo conflict, regardless of the subsequent political positions held by those accused.
