US President Donald Trump on Tuesday launched a fresh criticism of Fox News, accusing the conservative-leaning television network of giving excessive airtime and favorable exposure to political candidates who oppose Republicans and his Make America Great Again (MAGA) movement.
Trump made the comments in posts on his Truth Social platform, expressing particular frustration over interviews the network conducted with Democratic candidate Abdul El-Sayed and independent Senate candidate Dan Osborn.
“FoxNews is promoting the Dumocrats, not the Republicans and MAGA,” Trump wrote, accusing the network of having “totally lost their way.”
The president’s criticism reflects his continuing scrutiny of media coverage of Republican candidates and his expectation that outlets broadly viewed as sympathetic to conservatives should provide greater exposure to Republicans.
Trump also questioned Fox News’ decision to conduct a long-form interview with Osborn, an independent candidate challenging Republican Senator Pete Ricketts of Nebraska.
The president argued that giving Osborn an extended platform could benefit a candidate competing against a Republican incumbent.
“The ‘other side’ doesn’t give our people any positive exposure or airtime,” Trump wrote, criticizing what he described as an imbalance in media coverage between Republicans and their political opponents.
Trump’s comments came as political campaigning and media coverage intensify around elections across the United States. His criticism of Fox News underscores the increasingly competitive relationship between Republican politicians and media organizations that have traditionally attracted conservative audiences.
Although Fox News is widely regarded as a major outlet for conservative viewers, Trump has previously criticized the network when its coverage or programming has failed to align with his political expectations.
The president’s latest remarks suggest that his concerns extend beyond the amount of coverage given to Democratic candidates to include independent candidates who could potentially affect Republican electoral prospects.
Osborn’s challenge to Ricketts is particularly relevant to Trump’s criticism because Nebraska is a strongly Republican state and Ricketts is an incumbent Republican senator.
Trump questioned why Fox News would devote significant airtime to Osborn, suggesting that the independent candidate’s exposure could provide an advantage to someone running against a Republican.
The president also highlighted what he considers a broader disparity in political media coverage.
According to Trump, conservative and Republican candidates do not receive comparable positive exposure from media outlets associated with Democrats or the political left.
He argued that despite what he views as an unfavorable media environment, he had succeeded electorally.
“It is a miracle that I won, the last by a landslide, three Presidential Races!” Trump wrote.
His remarks appeared to reflect his long-standing complaints about media coverage of his political campaigns and his belief that conservative candidates face an uneven media environment.
Trump’s criticism also places Fox News in a delicate position. The network has built a large audience among conservative and Republican viewers but also operates as a mainstream news organization that regularly interviews politicians from across the political spectrum.
Providing airtime to Democratic and independent candidates is part of the broader political coverage undertaken by major US news organizations, particularly during election periods.
However, Trump’s criticism indicates that he believes Fox News should place greater emphasis on Republican candidates and issues supportive of his political movement.
The comments are likely to generate further discussion among Republican supporters and conservative media audiences over the role of Fox News and the extent to which the network should distinguish itself from other national news organizations.
Trump's relationship with Fox News has at times been supportive, particularly when the network's coverage has aligned with his political positions, but he has also repeatedly attacked the outlet when he believes its coverage has been insufficiently favorable.
His latest posts demonstrate that the president continues to pay close attention to the network’s political programming and is prepared to publicly criticize it when he believes Republican candidates are not receiving adequate exposure.
The dispute ultimately highlights the continuing tension between political leaders and media organizations over how candidates should be covered during election campaigns.
For Trump, the issue is not simply whether Democratic and independent candidates receive interviews, but whether Republican and MAGA candidates receive comparable opportunities to present their views to voters.
His remarks are therefore likely to keep the spotlight on Fox News as the network balances its conservative audience, its news responsibilities and the competing demands of candidates seeking national and local political office.
