As Nigerians prepare for the February 2015 general elections, a cleric
of the Anglican Communion in Delta state, Venerable Felix Okonkwo has
cautioned Christians to be wary of the All Progressive Congress (APC)
saying it is an "Islamic party" with fanaticism as its mantra.
In his sermon during a special thanksgiving service in honour of Ifeanyi Okowa, the governorship candidate of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party in Delta State, Ven. Okonkwo told the congregation: "As Christians we have a right to our faith, Nigeria belongs to all of us. If you look at the party, you will agree with me that it is out to promote and propagate the ideas of Islamism. We cannot support such a party. If you go through APC you will know that they have nothing good for this country. Their business is to kill and destroy."
He appealed to the congregation which included the incumbent Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan, to be vigilant so that the APC will not succeed in its bid to impose Islamic agenda on Nigerians.
The cleric, who is the Vicar-in-Charge of St. Phillips Anglican Church, Asaba, venue of the service, called for reconcilliation and forgiveness by all within the fold of the PDP in Delta State so that they can put up a united front during the election.
After his sermon, Okonkwo then begged Governor Uduaghan to support the church in completing some of its projects, the governor in turn announced a donation of N10million towards the completion of a building project within the church premises.
Delta State is a key stronghold of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party in Nigeria's oil-rich Niger Delta, the home region of President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, a Christian, whose most prominent opponent in the presidential race is a Northern Muslim, General Mohammadu Buhari of the All Progressive Congress.
