United States and Saudi Armed Forces Launch Joint Precision Air Strikes Against Iranian-Aligned Groups in Iraq Following Waves of Drone Attacks

In a significant military operation, United States Central Command (CENTCOM) and the Saudi Arabian Armed Forces executed a series of joint precision air strikes targeting Iranian-aligned groups and infrastructure across eastern and southern regions of Iraq. According to formal announcements issued by the United States military and the Saudi Ministry of Defense, the combined air operation was launched on July 28 in direct retaliation for more than 30 unmanned aerial drone strikes carried out over the preceding 72 hours under the direction of Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).

The military command stated that joint US and Saudi fighter aircraft conducted coordinated bombardments against multiple strategic locations, specifically focusing on weapons storage depots and logistical hubs utilized by militant groups. CENTCOM asserted that the recent drone offensives directed by the IRGC were intended to strike US military personnel stationed in the region as well as critical Saudi petroleum and energy facilities. Although US military officials confirmed that the attempted strikes against American assets were successfully intercepted and proved ineffective, the sustained volume of attacks prompted the decision to carry out joint retaliatory strikes.

Military statistics released by CENTCOM underlined a broader pattern of escalating hostilities, revealing that Iranian-backed groups operating inside Iraq attempted over 600 separate attacks aimed at US facilities and personnel between February and April. In its official press release, CENTCOM warned that both the IRGC and its affiliated armed proxies must immediately cease offensive operations against regional targets if they wish to prevent further large-scale military actions from combined US forces.

In a parallel statement issued early Wednesday, the Saudi Ministry of Defense confirmed its direct operational participation alongside the US military, clarifying that its involvement came as a specific response to cross-border drone strikes launched from Iraqi territory against vital petroleum installations within the Kingdom. Citing Article 51 of the United Nations Charter—which explicitly guarantees a sovereign nation's inherent right to individual and collective self-defense—the defense ministry stated that the combined strikes were carefully calibrated and targeted to neutralize threat vectors threatening the Kingdom's economic infrastructure. The ministry reiterated that while Saudi Arabia remains committed to avoiding broader regional escalation, it reserves the full right to take necessary defensive measures to safeguard its national security and energy assets.

Reports from local Iraqi news outlets and military officials on the ground indicated that the joint strikes hit several command facilities belonging to the Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF), a state-recognized umbrella coalition comprised predominantly of Shiite armed groups. Heavy explosions were heard across multiple provinces in southern and eastern Iraq, including Basra and Wasit province situated south of Baghdad. The regional command of the PMF in Basra reported that its headquarters was struck by foreign aircraft at approximately 2:00 a.m. local time on Wednesday (23:00 GMT Tuesday).

Following the aerial bombardment, the central leadership of the Popular Mobilization Forces issued a statement condemning the joint military operation as a treacherous attack targeting official security infrastructure recognized by the Iraqi state. Initial casualty assessments provided by the PMF confirmed that the strikes resulted in multiple deaths and injuries among personnel on-site, alongside extensive physical destruction to administrative buildings, vehicles, and military property. Describing the joint US-Saudi operation as a dangerous escalation and an unprovoked violation of Iraqi territorial sovereignty, the PMF confirmed that national security institutions and government authorities in Baghdad are actively evaluating the full extent of the structural damage and human losses incurred during the overnight air raids.
