Lagos, February 21, 2025 – The Western Marine Command of the Nigeria Customs Service has recorded its largest single seizure of cannabis sativa, demonstrating its unwavering commitment to combating smuggling along the nation’s waterways.
The interception occurred on Thursday, February 20, at around 11 p.m. when officers of the Command, acting on credible intelligence, were patrolling near Ilase Sea Beach, approximately 200 nautical miles from the Lagos anchorage. The operation, led by Comptroller PK Bamisaiye, resulted in the confiscation of 3,793 loaves of cannabis sativa, weighing 1,958 kg and packed into 53 sacks. The illicit cargo has an estimated Duty Paid Value (DPV) of N398,265,000.
According to Comptroller Bamisaiye, the smugglers attempted to evade capture by fleeing into the sea, abandoning their boat in the process. “Our officers, ever vigilant and resolute, secured the boat and brought it to our office, where a thorough search confirmed the presence of the contraband,” he said.
This latest bust follows a similar operation two months ago, when the Command seized 15 sacks of cannabis sativa, totaling 538 kg and valued at N107,205,000.
Bamisaiye expressed gratitude to the Comptroller General of Customs and his management team for their continued support in providing critical resources and equipment that enhance the Command’s operational efficiency. He reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to collaborating with the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) and other security agencies to tackle smuggling and protect the nation’s borders.
“This seizure is a testament to our relentless fight against illicit trade. We remain steadfast in making our waterways unsafe for smugglers and ensuring a secure environment free of illegal activities,” Bamisaiye added.
The Western Marine Command has issued a stern warning to individuals engaging in smuggling, urging them to desist from such unlawful activities or face the full force of the law.
